RENO — The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday refused a rural Nevada church’s request to enter a legal battle over the government’s authority to limit the size of religious gatherings amid the COVID-19 pandemic — after the church won an appeals court ruling last month that found Nevada’s restrictions unconstitutional.

Attorneys general from 19 other states had recently joined in support of the unusual request from Calvary Chapel Dayton Valley east of Reno.

They were urging the Supreme Court to rule on the merits of the Nevada case to help bring uniformity to various standards courts across the country have used to balance the interests of public safety and freedom of religion.

The church’s lawyers said in a court filing last Thursday they wanted the high court to “clarify for all that the First Amendment does not allow government officials to use COVID-19 as an excuse to treat churches and their worshippers worse than secular establishments and their patrons.”

In a 5-4 decision in June, the Supreme Court refused Calvary Chapel’s request for an emergency injunction blocking enforcement of Nevada’s attendance limit at houses of worship.

But the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco ruled in favor of the church last month, finding it was unconstitutional for Nevada to treat casinos and other businesses more favorably than churches.

Pentagon declares climate change a 'national security issue'

The Pentagon will now consider climate change when planning war games and will incorporate the issue into its future National Defense Strategy, according to a Wednesday announcement.

"There is little about what the [Defense] Department does to defend the American people that is not affected by climate change. It is a national security issue, and we must treat it as such," Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement.

Netflix has announced three new projects with antiracist indoctrinator Ibram X. Kendi, intended for a variety of age groups. “Stamped From the Beginning” will be a cross between a documentary and a scripted feature film, while “Stamped: Racism, Antiracism and You” will be similarly produced but for teens and young adult readers.

“Antiracist Baby,” currently a board book, will be reimagined as animated shorts for the pre-school set. Doc McStuffins creator Chris Nee has been tapped to executive produce the series.

One of Kendi’s core teachings is that it’s not enough to be not racist, but a person must be actively antiracist. While this seems like a small distinction, it is not.

The difference between “not racist” and “antiracist” is that the latter adds activism, while the former is simply a state of existing without putting concerns about race and racism first. Now that Netflix has taken up Kendi’s cause, it can use its considerable platform to turn children into antiracists, who think about race, racial differences, and their role in racism first and foremost.

Capitol Police head calls for permanent fencing around building

Permanent fencing should be installed around the US Capitol after the Jan. 6 riot in the building, which left five people dead, the acting chief of the US Capitol Police said in a statement Thursday.

Chief Yogananda Pittman said in the statement that a permanent barrier around the seat of democracy in the US has been suggested several times in recent years.

“In light of recent events, I can unequivocally say that vast improvements to the physical security infrastructure must be made to include permanent fencing, and the availability of ready, back-up forces in close proximity to the Capitol,” she wrote in the statement Thursday.

I mean I assume you'd love to have Georgia there. But it went blue in the election. So if there was an election now for secession it might be that they voted for staying. Would you be able to honor the will of the voters or just say it's "fake" since you didn't get results you wanted?
