During your lifetime, when have you seen our Congress do anything to help the average American?

All they do is try to fix "problems" with legislation that only serves to creat further problems that need to be fixed by legislation. It's a cycle, but since the time between the original "fix" and identifying the problems it created is measured in years or decades, people forget that it was Congress that caused the problem in the first point.

As an example (among countless I could cite): a while back a "problem" was identified that many kids were not able to get financial aid or loans for college. Mostly because banks aren't really find of loaning 10's of thousands of dollars to teenagers with no collateral, job, or credit history and parents in the lower middle class (and below) often didn't have the collateral or credit to co-sign on the loans.

So Congress passed legislation that changed the rules for student loans. It set collection rules that were advantageous to the banks. It made student loans ineligible to be erased by bankruptcy. Basically, it was a bunch of rules and laws that guaranteed the banks would get their money back one way or another.

It also set standards that (basically) forced the banks to give any student a loan, no matter how poor a choice it may be.

So, problem fixed, right? I mean now all those deserving kids could go get their college degree and earn lots of money, so win/win.

Until all the unintended (or intended) consequences. Colleges started raising tuition rates drastically. Price is whatever the market will bear, and since the demand went up (more kids now applying) so did the price.

A percentage of the students that got these new loans failed out, but still had to pay the loans back.

A percentage got their degree, but found upon entering the workforce that the competition for jobs was very high (due to more people having a degree), and in many cases couldn't get a job in their field. Still had to pay the loans back.

A percentage got out of college and got a job in their field, but quickly realized that a college degree doesn't get a job making $100,000 out of the gate. Most are in the $30-$40K range starting, and then it takes years of experience to command a higher salary. Still had to pay the loans back while struggling to live.

So this all lead to the problem we have now. Insane amounts of student loan debt that is crippling a section of our workforce, with a default rate that is climbing higher and higher. So people are asking that student debt be forgiven (i.e. paid off by the government, which means us the taxpayer).

Currently, the payments are on hold due to covid (which really just means there isn't a penalty for missing payments) but the interest is still accruing on all of those loans.

So, whatever Congress does to "fix" this mes, it's really a problem that they created, and the fix will surely cause other problems down the line.

Also of note, this is all very similar to the "subprime mortgage crisis" that lead to a recession in 2008.
