It tracks back directly to Constantine I, who -seeing how quickly his ignorant citizens latched onto the new cult- did the same thing and officially "converted" himself... even though he never accepted Christianity until he was on his deathbed. TO sway the faithful even more, he dispatched his Mother, Helena, to the holy land where she began to "discover" true relics that backed up the new sect up to 800 years AFTER the alleged events! Those relics included all three crosses from Golgotha AND their nails and Jesus' actual crown of thorns and shawl he wore while trudging his way to that hill. Just to cover ALL bases, she also "found" the actual burning bush that talked to Moses on Mt. Sinai. She was SOME explorer, that one!

Once Helena returned those relics to Constantinople, her Sonny-boy -and the city's namesake- decreed them authentic and soon enough Christianity was the official religion of the Empire and Constantine I had a huge group of devout supporters all eating right out of his hands. And THAT -my friends- is how Christianity was really born!

I really hate to break it to you but judea was of very little importance to ancient Rome. The Public Officials who displeased Caesar were sent there in disapproval because it was not important in any significant way to Rome.
Regarding its religion Rome couldn't care less. When Rome occupied territories it allowed, permitted and tolerated the indigenous people to continue with their religious practices. Rome was pragmatic.
