Re: Fimbulwinter – The harsh winter that precedes the end of the world
The global land and ocean surface temperature for December 2020 was 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.78 degrees Celsius) above the twentieth-century average, making it the eighth hottest in the 141-year record. On its own, that is a heck of a ranking. There are 141 years in the record book, and December was in the number eight spot! However, compared to the rest of 2020 and recent years, being the eighth hottest is actually pretty cool. 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit above-average was the smallest anomaly (departure from average) of any month this year and the smallest since all the way back in February 2018.

During December, temperatures were significantly hotter than normal (over 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit above average) across northern North America, Europe, Africa, and the Kara and Laptev seas in the Far North. And regionally, Africa had its hottest December on record.

More snow as unsettled summer continues on South Island, New Zealand

less than 50%

The unsettled summer is continuing in the South Island today, with snow on the mountains and more wild weather on the way.

There's fresh snow on the tops around Queenstown today, after a dusting on some peaks in the Lakes area yesterday.

Weatherwatch says temperatures will be down in many places as a storm near Stewart Island slowly tracks eastwards, dredging up the cold change.

The forecaster said most of New Zealand would be below average today temperature-wise, and single-digit highs were likely through some parts of Otago and Southland,

Freezing temperatures crack railroad tracks in Poland, snow blankets most of the Turkish city of Istanbul.
________

During the weekend and on Monday, January 18, most of Turkey was at the mercy of a cyclone that formed in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

On January 19, the temperature in Istanbul at night dropped to -5 ..- 6ºC, in Ankara it was freezing to -13 ..- 15ºC. The temperature dropped below normal by 4-8 degrees. And in coming days, the cold in Turkey will continue.

A recap of Norse mythology

less than 50%

Someday – whenever the Norns, those inscrutable spinners of fate, decree it – there shall come a Great Winter (Old Norse fimbulvetr, sometimes Anglicized as “Fimbulwinter”) unlike any other the world has yet seen. The biting winds will blow snows from all directions, and the warmth of the sun will fail, plunging the earth into unprecedented cold. This winter shall last for the length of three normal winters, with no summers in between. Mankind will become so desperate for food and other necessities of life that all laws and morals will fall away, leaving only the bare struggle for survival. It will be an age of swords and axes; brother will slay brother, father will slay son, and son will slay father.

Snow falls on Sahara Desert accompanied by plunging temperatures

Blankets of snow could be seen covering an area close to the desert town of Ain Sefra in Algeria, on Wednesday, January 13, as temperatures fell to -3°C. Surrounded by the Atlas Mountains, Ain Sefra is located an approximate 1,000 metres above sea level.

The unexpected scenes were captured by photographer Karim Bouchetata, whose striking photographs captured the snowfall settling on the famously dry sand dunes.

As per Desert USA, the Sahara is known to have one of the most severe climates on Earth, with very little rainfall, powerful winds and wide temperature ranges.

It's their memory of the last Ice Age. Several years with increased snow, no sun.

I love the mythology of my Viking ancestors, it's so bleak and heroic. It's heroic BECAUSE it's bleak. They know they're gonna lose to the Giants but they keep fighting anyway. It's the way we should all go down - swinging.

So do I. It is indeed the story from when the last ice age began, driving the survivors away from their traditional lands. Some went to Asia, but most were driven south as the ice wall grew and crushed the land.

The Norns don't spin or create the fate, they foresee it. By the law of averages, we are overdue for the next ice age. The scientists say it comes on fast.

Mainstream has most people looking the other way, thinking about warming. I think this is by design. When it hits it will be too late to do anything about it.

I live where it's almost always cold. I believe if it weren't for greenhouse gasses retaining suns heat in the atmosphere that we would already be well into the next ice age. Laugh if you want but if those gasses and their global warming effect go away, most life on earth will perish. Many preps have been made and Trillions have been siphoned off of world economies to make those preps. There will be small groups of survivors who can survive indefinately but for the most part earth will be a very inhospitable place.
