Had one telephone appt. that was useless, my bloodwork was ok so doc says keep doing whatever i do, didn't want my BP or anything.

As a U.S.M.C. veteran, the presidential pick for the Secretary of Veteran Affairs is very important to me. Especially since I have seen the V.A. literally fall apart in front of me! Just this last summer I tried to be seen at the Poplar Bluff, MO V.A. for a ‘pinched nerve’ . Not only was the long drive an issue but I waited an unbearable four hours, only to go to the emergency room to find out there was only one doctor! With eight more in front of me, needless to say I left, unseen.

So one can imagine how excited I was to learn of Trumps plan to ‘overhaul’ and ‘drain’ the system with his ‘Veterans Affairs Reform‘ program. Of his ten-point program, I was most excited about the tenth option:

“Ensure every veteran has the choice to seek care at the VA or at a private service provider of their own choice. Under a Trump Administration, no veteran will die waiting for service.”

Yesterday, on my monthly re-supply ritual, I stopped by my P.O. Box and picked up my mail. Among the correspondence, one stood out, as it was a letter from the V.A. I believed that I was expecting this letter, as I suspected it had to deal with my disability claim that I submitted in January. When I learned what this information was to contain, I was absolutely astounded!

In 2009 I had a procedure at John Hopkins V.A. – St. Louis. They took several blood tests prior to this procedure. I would have never guessed that the reason the V.A. was contacting me about blood tests from eight years ago, but they were!

I was told by MSN Kelly Noisworthy, of John J. Pershing, Poplar Bluff V.A.; my blood work from 2009 showed that I had Hepatitis C! EIGHT YEARS the V.A. waits to disclose this, potentially, life threatening virus? And a virus that is communicable and treatable, none-the-less!

After one year and one month of active duty service in the U.S. Marine Corps, during the Vietnam era, I was discharged on a medical under Honorable conditions. It seemed that the rigors of boot camp had ruined my knee, as it clearly states in my medical boards. Some may say that was not a lot of time to serve, but the fact is it did give me a permanent injury. And sometimes it is not the quantity, but the quality. The Vietnam era Woman Marines paved the way for the new Women Marine Corps. During the peak Vietnam campaign there were only 2,700 women that served in the Corps. We trained with the guys in those days, it was tough and one had to be tough to survive! It wasn’t till after the Vietnam campaign that the boot camp for women was ‘lightened up and geared more towards a woman’s body’, rather than a mans. But because of these initial women, blazing the trail, and the lighter duty training, there are at least five times as many Woman Marines that serve our nation today! So while it may not have been a long time, it was an import, challenging and historic time!

I have been trying to come to terms with the V.A. It seems as if they try, on an occasion, to help this vet out but more often than not; their lack of concern seems too obvious. To some it is simply a job but, to be fair, I have to state that there are others in the V.A. that are good people and there for the right reason. When one becomes a Marine, they become something more than just ‘self’ they become part of one, hence ‘Where we go one, We go all’. This Marine believes that the V.A., if they are to co-exist, should have the very same attitude. If there is one bad apple, it spoils the barrel.

My V.A. ‘Problem List’ reads like a Merck manual of Agent Orange symptom list and I am afraid it is not going to get any better, I was recently informed, that AO exposure has the potential to end up as Parkinson Disease. Why would the V.A. not disclose this information so I could prepare the best I could? This is my only complaint, as I knew exactly what I was getting into when I took that Oath to God and Country, and I was prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for that Oath … that was of course when I was 19 and full of ideals of what the world should be and way before I read Smedley Butler “War is a Racket”….

In my AO research, I have learned many things, as will my readers. I proffer this information:

I had no clue that MCAS El Toro was used in gun and drug trafficking! Think Ollie North and the Iran/Contras. I had several ‘memorial occasions @MCAS El Toro. One of which was when Nixon had his last flight on Air Force One. MCAS El Toro was used to bring our boys home. I guess this is why I tear up when I see the Vietnam Memorial, as it breaks my heart to actually see the sacrifice of war.

I disagree. Ive been using the VA for about 15years now. Ive had a triple bypass, 7 stents. a hernia operation, regular medical treatment and all my prescriptions. I feel my VA is better then my local hospital. Which if i wanted to I could go to and the VA would pay them.
Well over a million dollars in surgeries.
Ive had some of the best care anywhere.
Recently I had a heart attack at 3AM. our emergency room at the VA is on reduced hours so I was forced into the local hospital and the service was horrid compared to how Im treated at the VA.
The op is a little hard to understand and many VA employees are foreign maybe there is a language barrier. As with any health care or insurance you have to be a little pushy. Perhaps there is a commnication problem. The VA makes money on every transaction so its in their interest to help you and get you into as many programs as possible.
What % is your disability OP? You seem to have issues beyond a hurt knee.....which is why Im covered, Hurt my leg in Airborne school. 0% disabled, they give me no money, but I qualify for VA healthcare. I make too much money for it to be free. But I still feel its better then what my coworkers are paying for our private insurance.

Yeah, they have to help some to maintain the illusion of care.
