Giant ice rink planned in Mexico City's Zocalo Square

Mexico City - Residents of Mexico City will be able to skate for free for a month in an unprecedented giant open-air ice rink built on the central Zocalo Square, Mexican media reported Tuesday.

The ice rink, 3,000-square-metres large, will be open between December 1 and January 7 as part of the city government's plans to offer free entertainment options.

The ice rink will be the winter offer. Several artificial beaches were set up in summer, complete with sand and temporary plastic swimming-pools, across the city. The city has also closed central streets off to motor-vehicle traffic to allow bicycle rides.

The Zocalo is the most famous square in Mexico City, surrounded by the cathedral, the seat of the national government and the city hall. Special equipment to generate power and ice has already been set up in the square.

Authorities said 1,200 people will be able to skate at any one time. There will be skates on loan and instructors will be available to teach inexperienced skaters, who are likely to be in the majority.

Do you know how much will really cost to us??
First most of us don't know who to sky..
second we are between 68 to 78 degrees every day... and will be rains in our weather predictions.
We don't have the machine TRUMP has for the central park and rockefeller skating rink.
They don't pay electricity we the residents of Mexico City will need to pay.
When people need better services, and we have thousand of kids on streets that need food and shelter not an ice skating rink

Well, that's an understatement!

Feru, we lived part-time in MXC for almost two years. I loved the mild winter weather there, and I cannot fathom the cost to keep a rink frozen in that environment.

I agree; the money could be put to actual use in providing services for the citizens (a new sewage system comes to mind [no offense intended]) rather than entertaining visitors. Following the American model, I see.

Will I visit? yes I think this is one more sign. You see the Zocalo in Mexico is a sacred place for Aztecs... it was the center of their ceremonial place between the temples and the pyramids that the stupid Spanish destroy. Aztec says that there is the exact point where earth alienates with the Universe.

Anyway 2 or 3 months ago the a famous photographer gather almost 21,000 people nude in the Zocalo... for some this was art, for other was a symbol of the freedom Mexicans have, but for me it was just a type of ceremony to activate something. so many thousand of men, women, old, young, rich and poor naked ... equal... like when you born ..like when you lie in the morgue just naked of pride, of status, of ambition.
It was definitely a very strong awakening ceremony ...
So now I think this skating rink (ICE ON THE ZOCALO) is also a sign of the pole shift

The photographer's name is Spencer Tunick, and his work is simply fabulous.

wow nice pics...
definitely the meaning of this has to be something higher

I went to the Zocalo today, just before the inauguration.

That place it very special. Under the whole area of the Zocalo and surroundings is the Templo Mayor, the biggest Pyramid was use as a base for the Cathedral by the Spaniards
But Cathedrals are hollow so when the bells of the Cathedral reverberate over the Pyramid everyday... you need to be there to feel it.
The bells of our cathedral are special, there is the "Mariana bell" build in China 300 years ago and has a sister in Tianamen square (both squares, Tianamen and the Zocalo had a massacrer of students in the past something like a sacrifice, Read a book called Regina if you can it is very interesting specially the relationship between Mexico and the Tibet )
So I definitely think that the inauguration of this Giant Ice Rink today on sabbath was very ..very important for what is about to came.

I didn't find the TX photos on the site, but I can personally vouch for snow in East Texas the day before Easter this year on April 7th. I can't remember the last time we have had snow. But snow...in April...in East TX?! These were big, huge flakes that fell most of the afternoon. It was very strange, and there were many a little girl in their short sleeved Easter best shivering all the way to church the following day.

Very interesting, Feru. Thanks for the book recommendation. I have always had an unexplained draw to Tibet and the Tibetan culture. I look forward to the read.

Several years ago, we lived in MXC (Polanco) for almost two years while working on a contract. I loved the Zocalo. There is a hotel-restaurant on the north side (I think it is north) where we would spend lazy afternoons on the balcony watching the activity below. And, I loved the tranquility of the cathedral.

All that said, though, I had a friend who had a gun put to his head on a Sunday afternoon amongst hundreds of people in the Zocalo. The woman he was with talked the gunman down, and the gunman ran away. He wanted our friend's watch. Unfortunately, not being a native, I never felt completely safe there after that incident. But MXC is a fantastic place, and your theories about the ice rink intrigue me.
