It's normal in the winter...

Tell him to wait until the sun cycles get longer.

hens will lay from 6 months to a year year and a half and then take a break.. then they start again laying bigger and more regular...

He does feed lay mash for the protein, cause they need it for their bones and the egg calcium, if he doesn't feed lay mash it will come out of their bodies and lessen their life

They are taking a break, no need to kill them...

They also moult right around then, lose some of their feathers and get new shiny ones....

It's winter. Use heat lamps in the hen house and the hens will lay.

Are you both retarded?

Chickens lay according to number of daylight hours.

In winter, there is less daylight.

If your pal wants winter eggs, he has to add a light to the inside of his coop, on a timer. They need 10-12 hours of TOTAL light per day.

They also need to sleep, which they cannot do if you leave the light on all night. You can kill them if you do.

And, ffs, let him know they stop laying again when they molt once or twice a year, depending on breed.

If he wants eggs during molt, he has to up the protein a lot, so they can grow feathers and eggs at the same time. Soft cat food is a cheap supplement, as are sardines. They love both.

Idiots.

It's a large flocks, several dozen chickens and they've ALL stopped laying. He says he's gonna have to kill them all. I don't know anything about this except it sounds rather apocalyptic.

Has anyone seen this before and do you have any advice?

Chickens are like people, he needs to go into the henhouse and talk to them and explain it like he is talking to a millenial.
Then the chickens will understand and feel the love and start laying.

Put an infrared light in their coop. They'll be laying in one to three days. The only other reason is you might have a persistent predator nearby. Like a racoon or a bobcat. Sometimes this will cause them to stop laying, but rarely.

I'd say with almost certainty, it's the weather. Tell, him to relax!

Has anyone suggested feeding the chickens laying pellets and crushed oyster shell? I had chickens for most of my life and I always gave them a little of both at least once per week. Both are available at just about any feed store.

I love chickens ....and eggs....I know he's always taken the best care of these little guys, I'd hate to think he'd have to kill them. I guess he can't afford to keep them if they won't lay.

Is there any sickness that might cause this? Weather condition?
 Quoting: PresidentElect BlueStateRebel

Don't kill them.
It is winter with shorter days, they slow down and sometimes stop laying.
Make sure they are getting plenty of protein. They will start laying again as the days get longer.

Tell him to put a light on in their coop for an extra 4 hours in the evening. Chickens need 14 hours of daylight to lay. In the winter, we only get 10 hours or so of daylight. Chickens are dumb and all it takes is a little light to keep the eggs coming. You’re welcome.

The hens need more light, not more hear. A protein boost wouldn't hurt.

Make sure they have grit if they're confined and not free ranging...

Lack of grit will make the whole flock stop laying. My chickens never completely stop laying in winter, just slow down.

Put a light in the coop. Chickens go by light to lay eggs. Doesn’t need to be a heat lamp because temp makes no difference, just light. Put in safe spot and In about 4 to 7 days the hens will start laying again.

Re: NEED ADVICE: My friend's Entire Chicken Flock have stopped Laying - ANY IDEAS - He may have to kill them
They stop laying in winter when there is less daylight.
They also stop laying when they molt.
A third reason hens won't lay is a nearby predator. If they sense a predator, they will hold it in. Its instinct to ensure the survival of their offspring.

Several things to try.
1. Add a light source to make sure they have a minimum of 14 hours of light.
2. If they are molting, they need more protein and vitamins. All their nutrients will go into making new feathers. It is common to give hens cat food during a molt.
3. If they are holding it in due to a predator nearby you have to remove the predator. Try wolf or fox urine.
4. Red pepper flakes. Chickens do not taste the spice but it will make them lay. The eggs are also much larger when fed red pepper flakes.
The power is yours. Take it back.
In a world where you can choose to be anything, choose to be kind.
