Boys or Girls are not (sexually) romantic at age 8 but they do love a new found friend,in fact children at age 8 are in a sexuality stage Freud calls the Latency Period meaning it is a time when they have no sexuality or desires it is like dormat or asleep & they are interested in playing and other nonsexual activities, they have no desire to explore their genitals like in an earlier stage but that will come again later when hormones begin to rage. About a year an a half ago our niece went through a period where she wanted to be called by a boys name and she only dressed as a boy. She was about 11. My youngest came home once after being around her and through a poster at me that she had colored. It said she was lesbian. She was only 9 and crying.
Fast forward to now and my oldest daughter who is 13 now wants to be called by a boys name and wants to join a bisexual group on Zoom. My kids go to private school so this isn't coming from public schooling. Its becoming an epidemic with kids.
