Pardon my ignorance, but how exactly are these hedge funds going to be able to cover their shorts? They obviously can't afford to pay right?

You don’t get it... They play both sides...

So as the price increases, they buy, they over buy to cover the loss on the short position. Now, they will sell, and reinstate the sell position thereby doubling their profit...

They ALWAYS play both sides, they are called “hedge” funds

They liquidate other holdings that have positive gains...

Crypto and Gold/Silver are first.
