General Motors to Abandon Internal Combustion Engines
On the top-of-the-hour radio news, I just heard that today, GM announced that they plan to be selling an all-electric fleet by 2035. Big trucks not included (yet).

I don't like posting links, but I found one that backs up this claim.

[link to www.roadandtrack.com (secure)]

(at least it's a car enthusiast source, rather than MSM)

This is a thought-provoking bit of information, and that's why I thought it belonged on GLP. I don't see myself piloting an electric vehicle anytime soon. Hell, if there's no demand for gasoline, I'll be able to have it all to myself (provided I can still find a station with a gas pump).

They indirectly kill thousands of people of color mining cobalt. Also, gasoline is almost perfect as a fuel. Lots of energy per gallon, it’s clean, easily transported. You can fill up in a few minutes and drive 400 miles.

Electric cars are OK as commuter vehicles. They won’t work as a truck.

Don't get me wrong . . . I'm not celebrating the non-efficiency and non-environmental-friendliness of this development. I've never bought anything new, and by 2035, I'm sorta doubtful I'll be buying anything new-to-me. I will, in all likelihood, be marveling at the durability and versatility of the Honda Element. And bitching that its oil filter should be more easily accessible.

have to,oil will be gone by 2035,smartest business decision gm has made in many years.

bio oil will carry the future demand for gasoline but its a hard slog.very tight margins.

A good, SIMPLE, electric car or truck could be designed, with a range extender trailer or hitch attachment. Something with at most one computer with open source, a panel of steam gauges and totally maintainable for the next 200 years. Something with no unnecessary electronics at all.

Of course, if you want it you'll have to DIY. Some states still allow you to register a scratch built car.

Mine does that, but it's got 355K on the original drive train with minimal maintenance. I'll keep driving it until it's not useful and then switch in the backup car. That one only has 135K on it.

Of course, GM realized their mistake and stopped producing that line in 2002.

They never figured out how to build a vehicle with an internal combustion engine so taking this business path was better than having a media release saying they had given up

I suggest not to with the exception of high quality durable multi-fuel micro-turbines that can serve as range extenders for electric vehicles.

Synopsis:

My first video blog in a series about complex engineering marvels that are going to change the world in the (near) future. This week's piece? Micro gas turbines being used as generators to recharge electric drive trains in commercial vehicles.

Except the devastation it has on the environment. Drilling for oil is much safer and cheaper.

try driving a mitsubishi lancer evo for the same effect. Plenty of high performance cars without a fraction of the problems Tesla's have. Also any mechanic can work on gas engines, elon will not share repair information with the auto repair community, like every other car manufacture does

Tesla does suck from the repair side. But it's still an automobile. Nuts and bolts hold it together, wrenches take it apart. Nothing exotic about the motor or batteries, either.

Tesla is a new car company, and is learning as they go. Part of the game. Every manufacturer ends up with a little egg on their face with new models.

Batteries do last. There's quite a few 2012 Volts in the 200k-400k mile range, with no appreciable range loss.

My '13 Volt just hit 150,000 and I'm not seeing any issues from the battery. It was a mother fucker to put a radiator in, though. suicide

The real future for energy will be hydrogen. It's more readily available than nearly anything on earth and proof of concept vehicles have already been tested. It's also as clean as can be. The main source will be splitting hydrogen from water, leaving oxygen as the only byproduct
