Yes, they want to know who has the guns first!
American's should look at this like your constitution has been ripped up and plan accordingly.
Think of how many things have been done already that are unconstitutional!!

I used to hide my diary, etc in a Kotex box no one ever bothered, lol. when you go to the range, usually they point the gun and shoot. Try having the gun where you would carry it and practice grabbing it from there and in one motion lift and fire. Also dont think of the gun as in your hand, think of it as part of you, an extention of you. In a real situation no one will wait for you to aim perfectly. Good Luck.
