Re: GOODBYE: The Last Two Toys R Us Stores Follow Blockbuster To Graveyard Of '90s Retail Icons
I went over to the mall-area here in SE Pa and literally half of the stores in the strip malls were shuttered.

I went over to best buy for something and they had the entrance roped off and this dude was just standing there looking at his phone and I had to ask to be let in.

Once I was in, I noticed that half of the shelves were empty, half of the tv's were missing from the wall-displays...

Retail is fucked, we are about to see some interesting times.

Your first and last sentences aren't earth shattering.

However the meat of the sandwich is insane to me. I went to best buy yesterday for a 50' ethernet cord (goddamn puppy chewed my ethernet cord to the point i realize it's nine thousand tiny little braided copper wires in there, cleo is worth a million ethernet cords though). My experience was surprisingly normal (oxymoron baby). There were two greeters, both annoyingly peppy, especially while masked. The place was poppin', and the shelves were full. May I ask where you live, and make a predicition?

Guessing economically fucked and rural area. No offense intended.

OP's post was amazing.

It's Wyomissing, Pa.

It's a fairly wealthy area tbh.

Best Buy in my area is hurting, about half stocked.Gonna miss them.Nice people working there.NOT economically fucked,NOT rural .Just surrounded by suburban KARENS who order everything online.Anazon vans roam the neighborhood all day.Retail is collapsing and so is the tax base and those second income jobs that kept many families above water. The closer you get to the city the worse it gets.Rural areas went to shit years ado when taxes drove away all the factories and corps bought up all the farms. Now it's the cities turn.Angry millenials and gangbangers only destroy shit.

Yeah, Amazon is going to put them all under.

Walking around my area you can see piles of Amazon boxes on many porches and in the trash with Amazon trucks and vans stalking the streets.

Amazon killed the Toy-R-Us stores.

Only partially, Actually, Bain Capital and private equity killed Toys R Us. Bled it dry.

The company went bankrupt around 3 years ago; these two “remaining stores” were actually from whoever bought up the name, trademarks, etc (rights in the USA) after the bankruptcy. I do believe there are some shops left overseas (at least before the pandemic).

Believe nothing you hear and only half of what you see.

I'm just a product of insufficient modality.

Humans of Earth! I have come in peace. You need not fear me. I mean you no harm. However, it may be important to know that most of you will not survive the next 24 hours. And those of you who do survive will be enslaved and experimented on. You should in no way take any of this personally — it's just business!

We could blame all kinds of invisible forces or nefarious plots, or we could simply point out that the biggest group of consumers right now are stretched unbearably thin, and prioritize time with family over shopping. This has been going on since the invention of online retail. 15-45 year olds don’t have the time to go to the mall...I hated goi g shopping my whole life. Ordering is infinitely more convenient.

No one is plotting to make you a slave. Jus because your generation enjoyed the mall doesn’t mean millennials, X or Z care about food courts. The most evil shut going on is just how rich bezos got by selling us everything conveniently.

I always hated toys R us. Extremely overpriced and over crowded shopping experience. OK when the kids were young I might checkout the fad toy of the year with them to pass some time but then order it from elsewhere for Xmas and birthdays.

Likewise with Blockbusters they were damn lucky to survived for so long. When all we had was VHS tapes they wanted double the rental cost of your small local stores. Likewise with DVD's im still shocked when some people actual spend good money on rehashed TV series box sets and another bundle of Harry Potter collection when my last CD DVD purchase was back around 2002.

Well, at least things like the NFL, NBA and MLB are still really good and friendly.

Oh, wait.

Well, at least TV shows and movies are still really good and friendly.

Oh, wait.

Well, at least schools, education and Silicon Valley are really good and friendly.

Oh, wait.

Well, at least institutions like the Boy Scouts of America and most churches are really good and friendly.

Oh, wait.

Well, at least public libraries are really good and have friendly storybook times for young children.

Oh, wait.

Thanks, liberals/leftists/libtards, for all that you do and all that you are. You're really wonderful and really beautiful. Thanks again.

Private equity, vulture capitalism... Gutted by greed.

Leverage into the billions and rather than use the money for the business, the executives pay it to themselves as commissions, bonuses, and "operating expenses".

The zombie carcass remains for a few more rounds of "debt restructuring" (more leverage) until it's dead.

Amazon didn't put these retailers out of business, the execs did.

All of the unpaid debt is put on the public balance sheet to boot! Enjoy :)

Re: GOODBYE: The Last Two Toys R Us Stores Follow Blockbuster To Graveyard Of '90s Retail Icons
Internet and social media narcissism destroyed the toy industry. If you look at the large majority of buyers of toys and collectibles, even board games, it's from adult collectors.

Adults, many 'streamers' and 'content creators' have various toys on their shelves and walls for display... not play.

Meanwhile 8-12 year old's are more concerned in getting an iPhone or tablet, anything they can use to feed their growing narcissism, instead of action figures and dolls.

Go to school with a $1200 phone and you are a star... try showing off a $10 action figure or doll, not going to win you 'popularity' contests.

This is why the toy companies are marketing high end custom and limited designs, reproductions etc... to adult collectors.

Much like everything else in CLOWN WORLD, everything is inverted and perverted. Adults wanting toys for their collection and kids wanting high end tech at younger and younger ages.

Society is broken. It's not coming back. This is end times stuff on every level, in every aspect. The toy industry is just one example of a greater whole... the Fall of humanity.

Toys used to be about fun and imagination. Now young kids want digital items in their games, nothing real or tangible. They are hive minded and want what others have. Not something that feels like their own.

Don't you see the bigger picture here? You've all become monsters and don't even realize it.

Re: GOODBYE: The Last Two Toys R Us Stores Follow Blockbuster To Graveyard Of '90s Retail Icons
Was in Best Buy about 2 months ago - never again ! As soon as I walked in I was descended on by 4 employee vultures.
All I wanted was a high end surge protector.
After I got what I wanted, I was constantly harassed by some fool employee
that wanted me to buy a Verizon Cell Phone and contract. Kept telling him "no" I don't need a cell phone - he followed me all around the store.
When I got to the register, I dropped the surge protector on the floor in the main isle, told Mr Verizon to "fuck off" and walked out of the store.
And you are right, there wasn't shit on display or on the shelves....

These were not old Toys R Us stores. Those had all shut down earlier.

These were two stores that were to be the beginning of a comeback effort. Sadly, they opened in November 2019, something like 1-2 months before we began to hear the first news of a pandemic in China.

Toys R Us has been around since the 70s. And there is actually 1 Blockbuster left in Bend, Oregon.
