Berea Ky reporting in.

Lost power for about hour today.

tree limb fell on some power lines

got it cleaned up and power back on.

28 degrees here.

we got a little bit of ice covering

roads in town are decent.

But heard there was a few wrecks on I-75

Our roads are mostly clear here now in WKY. Had power go

in and out here as well. Biggest hit was cell and internet

services so far. Many trees down. Numerous wrecks in the

area but nothing like in TX. This next wave is already

being set up as a major impact for the area. There are 2

more waves coming in starting Sunday and again on

Thursday. It'll push services here to the breaking point

if it's as bad as predicted. They don't handle snow well

here. Especially when it's in feet instead of inches. So,

again....we wait. Your area is also in the target zone btw.

i will be watching this thread and bumping it, want to stay on top of this.

where I am, so far so good.

in the lucky zone.
 Quoting: beeches

Thank you. I'll post whatever new info comes along in this area. This is such a vast and strange storm. I guess we were due for one but jeez.... lol. Again.... stay safe and stay warm!

Well....on a good note.....SoCal and NM will get a reprieve from this storm. Looks like everyone else in gonna get either snow, ice, rain or thunderstorms. Or....all of the above!

60% of the country will have a blanket of snow and ice!

'Close to 60%' of US to have snow, ice on the ground by next week

Updated Feb. 13, 2021 7:04 AM EST
AccuWeather forecasters warn that days after a deadly ice storm struck the country, a coast-to-coast storm will pack a major punch across a large part of the nation’s midsection late this weekend into early next week. The storm has the potential to be bigger and stronger than the ice storm that led to a deadly pileup in Fort Worth and treacherous travel and power outages across areas farther to the south and east in the United States.

"I don't even know what to say about the pattern,” AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno declared in his Friday morning podcast, in a rare moment that the weather rendered him speechless, and he added, “It’s just storm after storm after storm after storm after storm,” followed by a deep sigh.

Re: Winter Storm DOOM. Who Gets Hit and Who Doesn't? NWS Update pg 13
Posted this on the Texas weather thread ... but this imo is important enough for those not used to Cold Weather to see so I am cross posting it here:

BIG hint for those who aren't used to "colder" weather (COLD weather I define is when the HIGH for the day is no higher than 8 below zero f with overnight lows 20 or more below zero f):

You lose 40% of your body heat through your scalp ... COVER IT even when you sleep if you start to feel cold, feel free to wear it inside and to bed too!! (NO COTTON if you have any options - but get it covered and if cotton is your only option, well go with it!!

(that is why in pics or videos of the north country you will see people with no jackets just long sleeve shirts shoveling snow even though it is near zero outside ... but note they have a VERY WARM head covering on!!)

The other places are your feet and hands extremities

Socks ... against the skin NO COTTON!! Nylon or wool only!!

Feet perspire and cotton will hold that moisture and cotton loses any insulation quality it has when it gets wet or damp. When I am skiing in COLD weather (see my definition above) i put on a NYLON layer of socks for against the skin (wicks away moisture) and then heavy wool socks on the outside (wool keeps insulation even if it picks up moisture ... totally wet wool still provides at least 40% of it's insulation ability whereas cotton will suck the heat right out of you)

Gloves ... don't go out without them!! The BEST are LEATHER gloves (again a moisture issue) with insulation in them also. Best insulation for the lining in the glove? WOOL again, but almost impossible these days to find leather gloves with wool lining.

LEATHER WORK GLOVES that are lined with Thinsolate or something equivalent - again NO COTTON!! are relatively inexpensive and easier to find than something good in the regular clothing section. I keep those in each car in my winter emergency bag.

LAYER your clothes. Multiple thin layers work better than just a couple of thick layers. Sounds counter intuitive to those not used to cold weather, but believe me that is what you want to go with.

For clothes again stay away from Cotton being against the skin if you have any options. Use that nylon t-shirt you use in the summer for sweaty conditions as your base layer, and put the cotton another layer up (wool or silk works best ... but most down south don't have wool or silk clothes to wear as a base layer). Ditto for underwear ... use NYLON or SILK against your skin!! and layer out from there.

JEANS ... if they get wet they will SOAK the heat right out of you because they are Cotton!! Keep any thick cotton outer clothes DRY, DRY, DRY. Wool is OK as are many of the man made fabrics. Get the cotton covered by something so as to keep the moisture away from it!

GOT SNOW PANTS buried in a closet somewhere? If going outside THROW THOSE ON over your pants!! If no Snow Pants ... what about those nylon track suit pants?!! Once you come in from outside with WET COTTON clothes on you will begin to understand why wearing something outside of them to keep them dry and to cut the wind is so important.

Summary!!

* Keep head covered
* NO cotton against one's skin - anywhere
* Layer socks with only nylon, wool, or silk being the layer against the skin
* Leather gloves ... without cotton lining, lining an insulating fabric or wool
* Layer clothing with only nylon, wool, or silk against the skin
* If wearing cotton outer clothes outside KEEP IT DRY! ie: put on nylon track suit pants over your jeans or other pants or best, snow pants.

STAY WARM and you will easily survive.

When camping in zero and below weather for me choosing the correct clothing materials, layering, and figuring out how to brew up a pot of hot coffee was all I needed to stay comfortable.

I'd like to add to this that the human body can create considerable heat. If you are cold, start moving! Jumping jacks, running in place, and doing isometric exercises will warm you up and keep vital blood flowing to extremities.

I used to work in a frozen warehouse as a selector and forklift operator. The box was -10 F and the Ice Cream room was -30 F. As long as you were moving, normal selector gear was two pair of socks, two pair of sweat pants, two t-shirts and two sweat shirts. A Turtlefur to protect your ears and two pair of white cotton gloves and you were completely comfortable grabbing boxes. When you ran the hilo, (forklift) you had to really suit up as you just stood there pulling levers. Big boots, overalls, A coat and a trapper's hat with mittens. Gloves wouldn't cut it.

A huge difference from work wear between guys walking around stacking boxes and guys just operating machinery.

Great info! One important key to remember......if you're outside or in a cold environment, never allow yourself to begin to sweat! It's easy to remove layers to equalize your body temperature and to vent out heat. But once your clothes (especially socks) are wet, you're done. Frostbite begins immediately in wet clothing!

It was a big fizzle here in Wichita. We had 7-10" predictions and only got 3.4". It is still bitter cold though. Right now it's -7 with a -28 wind chill.

Checking in to see how everyone is doing. We're bracing for more ice storm and snow action later today here in East Central Kentucky. How's the weather where you are?

Went out for a few things yesterday and there were lots of empty shelves and racks. Makes me glad I've stayed in a state of ready to bug out or bug in for 2 decades. The panic among the unprepared was palpable.

How are y'all?
You're gonna stand there, ownin' a fireworks stand, and tell me you don't have no whistlin' bungholes, no spleen splitters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker don'ts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistlin' kitty chaser?

Same here about the snowfall amount, TrustNoOneKS. We were also forecasted to get over a foot of snow in total. In total, I think we got maybe five inches of snow. Many areas look to have gotten more than a foot of snow due to snow drifts, people like and such as myself driving on said snow on the roads, and generally the exceptionally rare snow plow coming through.

I have a digital clock in my bedroom which has a digital thermometer too. I do not know how low it can detect the temperature. I just know when I went to bed on Monday night, (the 15th), it read 3*F. It felt mighty cold in my bed room. It was very difficult to get to sleep and even more difficult to stay asleep. My bed is covered with bed cover on the mattress. On my bed is a sheet, blanket, and a comforter. I went to bed wearing a pair of my somewhat thick socks, shorts, a pair of sweat pants over my shorts and socks, a t-shirt, and a hoodie. I was still shivering fairly often until Tuesday morning. Almost immediately I got up for the day once the Sun was up and went to my car to start it. It almost did not start whatsoever. It was the hardest start for my car since I got it.

It went from 3*F at about ten-ish PM CST when the power finally came back. This was during North Texas's rolling black outs. I did not want to go back into an icy cold house in the dark. When I got up for the day it was literally -8*F in my bedroom. It was so cold in my room both by the time I went to bed and got up for the next day that I could heavily exhale from my bed and clear across the room my breath was still so thick. I am fairly certain my breath impacted the farthest wall in my room with ease. I learned real quick like not to breathe heavily. Otherwise my lungs intensely burned and I could literally feel sharp pains in all directions deep in my lungs the more I breathed heavily in my bedroom.

It got so cold in my bedroom that my water in my Atlin stainless steel cup froze solid by that next morning. I found out Tuesday night at my step father's convenience store from one of Cash Special Utility District's employees why our water had stopped running Monday night. I was in line to get my crappy dinner at his store. I also topped off my car's tank since being in my car for the last two days then had run down my car's tank from full to half. The Cash Water employee told me that the rolling black outs were to blame. He tried to tell his higher ups to tell the Governor to keep the power on at water treatment plant instead at their offices. The rolling black outs were happening with such rapid and long durations of time that the water pumps could not function at all by Tuesday night. The Cash Water employee further told me that it takes about a half hour to get all the water pumps back up and running again. By which point the power goes right back out for another hour or so straight. Since Monday night was the deepest freeze in over a decade straight and without the Cash Water's water treatment plant having reliable running electricity literally all of their customers had no running water since Monday night.

It is all good, TrustNoOneKS. It is the 20th today as of this message. It was real nice to feel some direct sunlight that made me feel warm yesterday. I figure in an hour or so it will be feeling similar again before the Sun sets today. The snow is definitely melting and I am quite fine with this. Winter is just a word until you live in the cold or frigidness of Winter for an extended amount of time. This is why so many people make fun of those who wind up in the cold or frigidness of Winter. Those people are in warm houses or wherever they are it is warm. So they have no concept of just how effin' cold it is outside even when they see it is snowing outside. Those same people making fun of those who are stuck in the cold or frigidness of Winter will eventually find themselves in a similar predicament when all hell breaks loose in America. So I feel nothing for such people.

Since Monday night was the deepest freeze in over a decade straight and without the Cash Water's water treatment plant having reliable running electricity literally all of their customers had no running water since Monday night.

Wow, I'm just so sorry you had to endure this. Hoping things are starting to look up. We finally got above freezing up here for an hour or two today and look to get up to 42 tomorrow. Really hoping it's better for you as well!

I've lived in Kansas for all but 3 years of my life, so I take cold and winter seriously and would never dare laugh at someone suffering in this. Poor heartless people have no idea of how awful it can get!

Those same heartless people will beg for forgiveness and/or whatever it takes to lull anyone they can into a false sense of security when same and/or similar things happen to them in real life. Especially as we march forward into the later Tribulation events.
Conspiracy Theorist is nothing more than a derogatory title used to dismiss a critical thinker.

A time is coming when men will go mad,
and when they see someone who is not mad,
they will attack him, saying,
'You are mad; you are not like us."
