This is catastrophic news not only for the continued freeze in nat gas distribution, but for the explosion in electricity prices which could see many customers see a February electricity bill in the thousands, if not tens of thousands. This is what a power trader at a Houston energy company advised us on Friday: Prices in response to the persistent cold have pushed load expectations to all time winter highs, and on par with the hottest summer days the ISO has experienced. Actual shortages could persist if units aren't weatherized and fail at any point. Monday peak is currently bid 4000, and balweek inclusive of Tuesday through Friday is 1000@2000. Off peak (nights) have traded insane levels as well, with the balance of the month trading 650$. For reference, summer of 2018 never came close to touching these levels. The highest trade on a balday was around 2000$, if i'm not mistaken. The PUC is meeting today to discuss coordination and potential conservation efforts, but this event will likely crush several firms who are not collateralized enough to weather (no pun intended) the storm IMO. And all those folks on griddy could literally be looking at paying 4$+ per KWh across the state (as opposed to 12 cents or whatever rate you got at your house), pushing power bills to the moon. Four dollars a kilowatt is insane! My problem is keeping my usage under 1000 kilowatts per month, because of the jump in price after 1000 kilowatts. Electricity rates by state: [link to www.chooseenergy.com (secure)] That looks like an energy broker. They don't service my area (western Michigan). There are others that do, though. You sign up with up with the broker for a fixed price and then get billed through the regular utility company. The ones I've seen around here are just for natural gas, though. (OP) User ID: 78212432 United States 02/14/2021 06:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It's different for everyone. No "hydro" bill here (western Michigan), just gas and electric, the latter coming from a variety of sources (coal, nuclear, hydroelectric, renewables). Both gas (our heat, dryer, cooking) and electric for the February 15 bill was $335.83. The next one will probably be higher. No water bill because we have a well but we do have sewer service which is about 100 bucks every three months. I'm always shocked when I hear what people in the west/southwest have to pay for water but, then again, I live where water is abundant. I have been a student of Adam Smith since I first discovered him after nuthugging Ayn Rand for a couple of years prior. That was twenty years ago, pre-Tea Party. I long ago cast away that Ayn Rand crap. I have yet to find a solid definition of capitalism, but Smith's seems to align with my own ideas. “It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest.” Both parties to a voluntary exchange transaction have their own interest in the outcome, but neither can obtain what he or she wants without addressing what the other wants. It is this rational self-interest that can lead to economic prosperity."
