When I lived in Texas, I don't recall ever having 'rolling blackouts' during arctic blasts, ice and light snow. I don't recall ever losing power in the nearly 12 years that I lived in San Antonio. Is this normal or something new?

It's the movement of water that prevents the build up of ice crystals, pressure actually lowers the freezing point and raises the boiling point, about 3 degrees per pound of pressure...

Bought me a dual fuel generator (gasoline or propane) 13,000watt,/13kw with 50 foot power cord to my new transfer switch.

This new unit replaces the old 4kw unit and all the extension cords running all over.

It will power everything in the house, including the heating system AND with the 50 foot power cable, I can leave it in my shed and just crack the door. I can barely hear it from there!

All in cost was just under $2,000 and that includes the cost of the electrician labor for wiring the outside connector and interlock switch.

Well worth it. I recommend you folks spend that covid cash on a prep like this. It may save your life.

It depends on how insulated your home is...the tradeoff for efficiency is the lack of fresh air, including valuable oxygen! A home that can burn a fireplace has enough draft to be safe, a sealed up home may be cheaper to operate but will likely make you sick if you stay there long enough...

That's very cheap...I wired a generator transfer switch to a series of inverters to run my solar power, the prewired box itself was about a thousand bucks...

Structures in Texas are not designed for extreme cold. Same can be said where I live in NH, is not designed for extreme heat - a heat wave up here is defined as 3 days of temps in the 90s.

Our furnace broke down and was beyond repair in December up one year. We live up north. We survived on a kerosene heater for a couple months and it wasn’t bad.

I am trying to be sympathetic to the southerners getting hammered by the winter weather. Texas always talks so tough.

Here in Ohio we deal with every extreme.
