Brings to mind Pastor Dana Coverstone's dream of JUST WHAT we are now seeing. He says it spreads, and that pols and bureauRats are helpless to prevent most of the nation from going down.

Before I finish off my last drink...seriously...Texas. Solid men, better women, succumb to a power outage and the inability to get to the general store. On GLP mind you. I guess most of the military are those type that pranced about in red high heels, and their offspring are all gender fluid. What a waste of time, penning prepper threads...should have just cast them off to the aetheral. Wow....what a let down. I'll never look at a Texas flag the same. You can make fun of my Canuck flag but guess what...we don't fold over this crap. Silly people, silly problems, no communities. Our homeless druggies are housed better then your elders. I can't believe it. SO much for 'looking to the bright light on the mountain'...you have scared elders, a weak populace who can't drive in snow and Our version of Trudeau, and you do nothing. WHile legally armed.
Sigh.

Guys, they just added New York and Ohio to that US POWER OUTAGE map.

10,000 - 50,000

If they are rolling out these blackouts intentionally, that map is going to get filled in.

Still no power in many areas near Houston. Supposed to be 10 degrees tonight. How many old people and babies will the Texas power companies indirectly kill tonight through their alleged poor planning?

Dontknow
 Quoting: We Who Watch.

How much more are you willing to pay in taxes and power bills in order to plan for events that may happen once every 30-40 years for 2-3 days? Honest question there.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79729047

honest answer

if you keep politics - meaning all the global warming tripe - out of utilities,

service will be good enough for everyday.

then lo and behold,

that sturdy everday de-politiicized utility will ALSO be able to handle all emergencies. Even ones that happen once a century.
Because the basics are in place.

that is how it works.
 Quoting: beeches

IMO this has little to do with climate change regulation. You need to bury every single power line if you want to avoid outages like this. Power companies won't do that willingly, you have to force them and even then it's going to cost the taxpayer and individual customers. UNLESS you want to transform utilities into public ownership. And if you're saying increased profits from decreased regulation would be pushed into an effort like this then I think that's a bit of a pipe dream to assume they'd do that instead of lining executives' pockets.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79729047

nice try.

power outages common in areas with buried power lines - lived in them for decades.

oh it looks prettier.

Repair takes many hours longer with all the digging needed to access the lines.

Saw a press conference on khou.com by a spokesman for Centerpoint in Houston. 25% of Texas is without power. They are unable to generate power because generators as well as back up generators etc. are frozen over. Wind parks are useless because wind turbines are frozen over too and solar panels are snowed over, so so much for that. We have to pray for these folks. I have lots of friends in Texas.

Where I'm at the power goes out almost every snow storm with wind. I think 6 or 7 times this winter a few for multiple days. 3 or 4 more during the fall blows. Get in your car for a bit charge your phone and turn on the heat. Then Back in bed. Drinking is encouraged.

It's not bad yo semi unplug for a bit. I makes you appreciate.

We did 10 days...no outside anything...just deep snow on the Coast...One track was laid by larger trucks then my Toyota...tracks to the beer store. 10 days of woodstoves, drinking buddies, children, women (of various forms) and now and then a buddy would in his 4x4 come by with a wee bit of a line...perfect. The cookery was impeccable by a few peeps who had chef'd. Texas...kerplooey...hope they all read the prepper threads now and stop writing about whatever it is texans write about.

I kinda feel bad for you all, kinda.

I live in the Northeast and shitty, cold, snowy and miserable weather hits in December and doesn't leave until spring.

We get snow, sleet, rain, high winds and power outages.

However, we are prepared for it. It's a yearly event.

So I Kinda feel bad, like I said, but after the cold snap that you're suffering through goes bye bye, I'll still be suffering through for another 2 months.

On second thought, suck it up snowflakes.

Next time, be prepared. Never ever put your trust entirely in the hands of others.

Buy a generator and install an alternative heating source. You'll ride out those pesky little inconveniences.

No offense, but the hardiest citizens endure what you're going through without complaining.

So, suck it up buttercups!

Freezing rain will build up on the powerlines until the weight of the ice (W/ wind) bring them down. I suspect this may be the cause of the power outages but am only guessing.

We always take our electricity for granted. Our power went out in Dec. for most of the day. It was inconvenient to say the least.

Take care of each other down in Taxas.

No, no, and no. Not this time. Temp hit 32 degrees at 9PM where I'm located in Houston. Power turned off at EXACTLY 2AM straight up. Neighboring plants were still online and operating.

Not downed power lines.

Now imagine yourself dealing with 115 degree heat with no electricity, water, water source etc...

You prep for your environment. Your body is acclimated to deal with your environment.

I have lived in Texas for 25 years. I can vaguely recall a little snow every few years gone by noon.

From May to Sept the temp never goes below 75 at night and days near or over 100 every damn day with no rain. We get at least a week or two of triple digits a couple times a summer. And BS about a dry heat - Texas is humid mostly.

Stop being such a seld righteous self centered turd. Have compassion on people.
Life is a spiritual war and no matter where we lay our head, we live in a warzone.

There will be casualties.

You do get to choose your side. I chose the Bright Side where my God fights for me.

Others chose the Dark Side and fight for an entity that views them with disdain and discards them.
