SPP is declaring an Energy Emergency Alert (EEA) Level 3 effective immediately for our entire 14-state balancing authority area. Systemwide generating capacity has dropped below our current load of ~42 GW due to extremely low temperatures and inadequate supplies of natural gas.

Seriously 2 whole days gimme a break ,,, are you all that soft it’s fucking Texas not northern Canada ffs,,,,,, power went out here in a blizzard a few years ago and we had no power for 2 weeks in -15c weather ........seriously yas all want doom so bad you’ll latch on to anything going wrong .

Now imagine yourself dealing with 115 degree heat with no electricity, water, water source etc...

You prep for your environment. Your body is acclimated to deal with your environment.

I have lived in Texas for 25 years. I can vaguely recall a little snow every few years gone by noon.

From May to Sept the temp never goes below 75 at night and days near or over 100 every damn day with no rain. We get at least a week or two of triple digits a couple times a summer. And BS about a dry heat - Texas is humid mostly.

Freezing rain will build up on the powerlines until the weight of the ice (W/ wind) bring them down. I suspect this may be the cause of the power outages but am only guessing.

We always take our electricity for granted. Our power went out in Dec. for most of the day. It was inconvenient to say the least.

Take care of each other down in Taxas.

Where I'm at the power goes out almost every snow storm with wind. I think 6 or 7 times this winter a few for multiple days. 3 or 4 more during the fall blows. Get in your car for a bit charge your phone and turn on the heat. Then Back in bed. Drinking is encouraged.

It's not bad yo semi unplug for a bit. I makes you appreciate.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78601060

Yeah, well, I did that yesterday in my car that is supposed to never lock if the key is in the ignition. It's (almost) fool proof in preventing locking yourself out of the car...

Until yesterday when I started the car, plugged in my cell phone to charge, shut the door and, yep, all doors locked. The electrical system must have gone a little haywire, which is unusual since the car is German made and designed for cold temps.

Did not have a second key (lost in the divorce) and the car ran for five hours. Phone was charged, though. Ha!

Everyone has a plan until they are punched in the face.

I'll be taking out a loan to order a second key. chuckle

Guys, they just added New York and Ohio to that US POWER OUTAGE map.

10,000 - 50,000

If they are rolling out these blackouts intentionally, that map is going to get filled in.

I am in Florida too and you should shut the hell up. These people are actually suffering. People will die as a result of not having heat or the fuel or money to pay for the fuel tonight. Worse some will have gotten carbon monoxide poisoning in desperation. So shut up about your flip flops and have some karma.

1. Wind generators probably are specified for normal TX weather and not normal Minnesota weather. That means they freeze up.
2. Huge portions of the nations generating capacity has change from Coal/FO to Nat Gas. This is due to regulations...particularly mercury.
3. Nat gas wells have frozen up. Limiting supply.
4. Nat gas is a by-product of fracking. Fracking died with lower prices so you get less Nat gas by-product from the dead wells.

This whole scenarios is easy to see coming and should have been modeled and avoided. Anyone saying anything else is LYING. This is all about system reliability and resiliency. Both of which are easy to model and predict. Anyone who is affected by these 'events' should definitely look at your politicians....they are responsible for setting laws and regulations and most state's utility commissions should have this as a priority. If anyone is upset, they only need to look in the mirror.

Reporting from Hobby Airport area. Power was restored at 4AM after 26 hours without.

Good God, I am loaded fucking for bear and ready to unleash on some state politicians when I thaw out.

Fuck this "green" BS and everyone of you 'close the coal plants for solar and wind' people. I've been fairly neutral to date, but you now have an active opponent...along with half of TX.

Solar and wind, my sweet TX arse. And, the batshit crazy "we can control climate" delusion ranks higher than the world of pretend where Santa and the Easter Bunny exist. Adults need to start schoolin' y'alls "green" asses with full-on reality to offset your BS Marxist education.

And, if we have to secede to take care of the State, well, I'm for that, too.

I've been searching for the answers to my questions, to no avail.

I hope someone can help me out.

1. What, exactly, is the cause of the Texas Windmills
that makes them not function in the cold?

2. How is it that a state with so much gas and refineries
is short of Natural Gas in a time of need?

Smells fishy to me.

DFW area here. -3 degrees. 93% humidity.
We never lost power. Were one of the lucky ones. So far.
I do have solar panels and a battery bank and 2 gas fireplaces that were designed to heat. Each can put out 75,000 BTU's. And I have a water filter, a home -made one with two Berkey filters. Cell service is spotty to non-existant in areas. I have a amature radio license and my daughter has a radio too, so we are able to communicate.

It's going to warm to like 23 today, but will only have sun till noon, then more freezing rain and snow predicted.

How much more are you willing to pay in taxes and power bills in order to plan for events that may happen once every 30-40 years for 2-3 days? Honest question there.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79729047

honest answer

if you keep politics - meaning all the global warming tripe - out of utilities,

service will be good enough for everyday.

then lo and behold,

that sturdy everday de-politiicized utility will ALSO be able to handle all emergencies. Even ones that happen once a century.
Because the basics are in place.

that is how it works.
 Quoting: beeches

IMO this has little to do with climate change regulation. You need to bury every single power line if you want to avoid outages like this. Power companies won't do that willingly, you have to force them and even then it's going to cost the taxpayer and individual customers. UNLESS you want to transform utilities into public ownership. And if you're saying increased profits from decreased regulation would be pushed into an effort like this then I think that's a bit of a pipe dream to assume they'd do that instead of lining executives' pockets.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79729047

nice try.

power outages common in areas with buried power lines - lived in them for decades.

oh it looks prettier.

Repair takes many hours longer with all the digging needed to access the lines.
 Quoting: beeches

I live in an area with buried power lines. We lost power once in the 17 years I have lived here. And that was because they had to repair some overhead lines in a neighboring community and shut down the power on purpose.

These idiots in charge can easily fix this shit, but the people are going to have to bitch about it or they are not going to spend the money. My God people, we have had cable TV since the 1970"s, buried cable lines.

You all act like a cold snap is the end of the world. What a bunch of morans. Grow a fucking pair.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74051082

These people in Texas are not prepared, not the humans, not their pets, and not their homes. They're not Canadians, they're not accustom to having temperatures near zero F, and wind chills sub-zero. Having to deal with something like this is a once in a generation occurrence. You would be surprised how rapidly the indoor temperature can plunge without proper heating, when the outdoor temperature is that cold. And we're talking about nearly 4 million people presently without electricity in Texas alone, not even including the other dozen states with nearly another combined million also without electricity. I fear that hundreds or thousands are going to succumb to cold-related death. And the casualties for the wildlife could perhaps be even far greater, especially for migratory life that sought refuge from this same arctic air within the south, and now is trapped.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79947581

Well said sadly... This is a catastrophic event. There are cattle, horses & the obvious beyond the stray cats, squirrels etc. There are countless homeless in Houston, as it’s typically warm. With millions at risk of freezing & lacking electricity, the death toll all around is likely significant... Heartbreaking.
