Austin area. Still haven't lost power. Even so, my house has been in the 40s inside the entire time owing to its 'light and airy' construction (which would actually be ideal during a power outage in summer). However, it's wholly inadequate for subfreezing temperatures with wind.

For that reason I'm no stranger to freezing inside a few nights per year; and since I hate being cold, years ago I took steps to mitigate any potential suffering during the one or three arctic blasts we get every year -- this one being the granddaddy of them all.

I bought wool clothing like a madman. Socks, sweaters, coats. Thermal base layers. Wool blankets. Warm boots. Coveralls (not wool). All kinds of shit. Needless to say, I currently look like I'm about to embark on an arctic expedition; and I'm pretty goddamned comfortable to boot. Well, except for the weight and resistance of this clothing.

My 'Buddy' propane heater is the only thing really keeping it above freezing in here. My water lines are long since frozen solid, so comfort is all that really matters at this point.

Losing power would obviously suck right now; but mainly just because of internet and my two little 1500W heaters. I have plenty of 12V electronics for just about everything else.

Basically, for me, it's just been sort of an inconvenience and not much else. Mainly the inconvenience of having to repair whatever leaks spring up when it thaws. Go long copper.

The only real doom is for the suffering animals and people who are stuck in the cold without much real recourse -- cold which in intensity and duration they are absolutely not acclimated for.

You people have no concept of struggle

You are literally posting on the internet complaining about lower outages.

This nation would never survive a nuke strike.

Bunch of pussies. Get some wood and start a fire like north koreans
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79627971

Obviously most people reading this don’t realize that Dallas and all south are in the SUBTROPICS. There was never a need to prepare for negative temps has it’s only happened 3 times in 120 years. There is no fire wood as everything is still alive and now wet and frozen. If it persists for more than a week, I’m sure they’ll break furniture and burn whatever burns.

Now. Just take one second and think. A region that hasn’t been 0 degrees in over 30 years. An influx of 10,000,000 people. Most paycheck to paycheck. Rolling outages that are only 40 minutes on and 50 minutes off. Each cycle causing those with precious energy to lose 4 degrees every time it comes back on. Watching as everything freezes slowly and add green technology to it. Then add politics. Then add the stupidity that comes from only living in the internet age. There’s no full on data now for consumption. I have to wait 20 minutes into the on cycle to even post this. As backup cell sites are now down. It will get only worse tonight.

Yep, prepare as soon as you can for those F5 tornadoes coming down, not the usual west to east, from up north. You're welcome

Good lord! Ice age....?

[link to earth.nullschool.net (secure)]
 Quoting: CosmicFire

it could start like this

it just needs to snow fall more than it melts and this is the sign that a new ice age is starting
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80058177

There’s 3 different ice ages that reoccur on a cycle. One is around every 10,000 years. One is every 1,000 years and one is every 300 years as in Europe in the 1700’s. All 3 are now due. Just because Ice is in the title. It’s called an ice age because of the large amounts of precipitation. It started 3 years ago when both Montana and Argentina lost over a million head of livestock to 10 foot dunes of snow.
 Quoting: Truth be known

The best cycle comes in 40..as in 40,000. Why do you think 40 is referenced so often in scripture?

It's also in 13 which is 4 and 13 and 40 are tied in our measurement systems.

oops sorry about that.

South Central Nebraska. Our low overnight was the lowest ever recorded here - it got down to 30 below.

Records have been kept here since 1904...

40 meters is 131 feet. Great Pyramid of Giza is built on 13.1 acres. Fun with numbers can take your mind off being cold. Jumping jacks help too or stepping jacks.

HOW DOES YOUR CELL PHONES WORK WITHOUT POWER??
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74840632

Rolling blackouts -- you charge when power is on, or some people have those battery thingys that charge your phone when power goes down.

My friend, a doctor has one for her phone.
 Quoting: Lady Jayne Smith

That does not explain the towers. They have 3 hour back up only. It happens in western colorado often. Never do we have cell for long.

Look at this guys picture! Every Texan better join forces & make sure this doesn't happen again. Screw the hippies. You can help the environment 95% of the time, but in emergencies, the other sources need to be ready to go.

Rolling blackouts still. Have power and internet for the moment.

Yay South Texas!!!! Ice storm rolling in tonight.

Looks like we may have a frozen cold water line (in spite of my running the pipe every few hours and leaving a drip) in the master bath - one of the few pipes we have on an outside wall. Appears I may be remodeling a few months earlier than expected.

Shudder to think of the conditions of the palms and lemon trees under the blankets.

I should not complain, we have rolling blackouts, others have been completely without power for over 24 hours.
 Quoting: Lady Jayne Smith

Hope you're holding up well, LJS! Imagine how many insects, plants, and animals have died in deep south from this weather. I hope your pipes don't burst. I've dealt w/ those so many times. NOT FUN!

Well now in rolling blackouts (off again at 4 am, back on at 6 am). and a new thing. Low natural gas pressure. Gas log fireplace that has always been faithful is now at only a low ember glow.

The house furnaces are not doing a lot. House is still cold, but better than nothing like the last 2 days were.

This - totally.

But, it is up to the Texas Governor (Abbott) to do it first and ask for aid from the Feds. Damn Constitutional order of operations.
