My house in Pilot Point has one rather small gas heater that uses an electric blower. We've been using 3 space heaters to keep the house at 60. With these rolling blackouts, I'm running the gas heater's blower with an inverter hooked to the battery out of my truck while the power is out and charging the battery when we have power.
Seems like we're getting a half hour of power then a half hour without.

We went put blankets on all horses yesterday morning and brought them in the barn. Got lots of sweet feed to keep them bellies hot.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73370805

LOL, you are worried about horses in 16 degree temp?!? Hahahah, that's NOTHING, up here it's been -30 to -35 Fahrenheit and we went for an after supper walk to visit the neighbors horses who did actually needed blankets. Yours will love the cool Temps.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77944477

depends whether it is "nothing". A Shetland pony would laugh it off, like you say.

a horse with a hunter clip may not, especially if the unusual temps are combined with wet stuff

I haven't lost power yet but we are using propane to heat the house. Unfortunately, I'm hearing that my neighborhood is running out of it. We're told to turn the temp down to 60*F to conserve what's left of propane till the road is improved to be able to transport propane.
There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn’t true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.

As long as we're having these blackouts, my job isn't open for business. If this is going to persist through the night, my wife and I can alternate shifts of sleeping and keeping the heater going. I talked with my foreman earlier this morning, he's not expecting us to open the plant back up any earlier than Friday... we'll see how things go with another storm expected to hit wednesday-thursday.

We have had rolling blackouts since around 1 AM. Hard to get a goodnight sleep when I need a Bipap. So far this morning it has been on solid for a couple hours. If they do this tonight I will have my generator ready. Our outside pets are on the back porch that I have inclosed with plexiglass and have a oil heater but it needs to be reset every time the power comes back on.

I'm here in Oregon waking up in day 3 without power. It's finally warm enough that I can take my tomato plants out to the greenhouse. The house is too dark without any lights. They are just babies

I have to patch up the greenhouse as well. The ice storm did some serious damage. But a drafty coop greenhouse is better than a cool dark house for baby plants.

At least my cellphone is working again. Apparently, the cell network was off for 2 days.

Really glad I filled up lots of bottled water. We are going to be using every drop. When the power goes, the well goes .

It's not so much the snow being the problem, it's the record-breaking low temps. Especially with older homes, houses aren't insulated like they are up north.

My daughter, son-in-law and their new baby are without power in Austin.

Went off last night at 2a.m. They were told it should be back on by Wednesday!

6 inches of snow too.

I'm here in CT:(

Told them to get to a hotel.
 Quoting: Impeach 46 JanJan

Do you think the hotels there have power? Or aren’t already booked? For now they should fill the bathroom with blankets and pillows on the floor, dress warm and light several safe candles in there. They will stay warmer.

In East of Dallas small town and we have power. Genny ready to go if we lose it.

Brutally cold, for TX, at 5.8 degrees! Have 8 inches of snow with more tomorrow and Wednesday.

Thank God for global warming, we might have frozen to death without it.

I have lived in San antonio since 1992. This is the worst crisis ever! We still have electricity and my car still works. Hear no traffic on the roads. I dont know if we even have snow plows. Roads are impassable. This is pure hell and another night of arctic temp looms. This is insane.

Waller county here. 25 miles west of Houston.

Power out at 1 am.

Don’t forget to turn on the oven and open the door if it’s gas and
light a fire in the fireplace

My fear is busted water pipes. Praying hard !!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79687757

I'm in same area.

Lost power for 3 hours, back on, then lost for 2 hours, back on then lost for an hour. Rolling outages ever since.

I have well, it was freezing up at 4am. Had to put a space heater right below pressure switch because it froze up and pump wouldn't turn on. Couldn't drip faucets and everything was going to freeze up.

To people that have wells:

Not enough to drip your faucets a little. Every 1-2 hours you need to run all faucets full blast for at least 5 min. Ensure your well pump cycles. Water from underground is something like 45-50 degrees. It will warm your well tank and pipes back up a bit. If your well pump doesn't cycle enough to keep from freezing between the well head and tank, you are totally screwed.

If your well pipes aren't insulated, go get some pipe wrap insulation now or wrap with old clothes then wrap trash bags over that. Run an extension cord and little space heater next to pressure switch, throw piece of plastic wrap or garbage bag over as a tent to keep that switch from freezing. That switch needs to work and is all that is preventing everything else from freezing.
