Is anyone else experiencing a cat food shortage?
I'm in the suburbs if Philly, about 45 minutes away. All stores, including Walmart, Giant and Tractor Supply are out of canned cat food and inventory has been low to none for months now.

I do order on Chewy sometimes and so far haven't had an issue, but I have with online ordering at Walmart for the specific brand I order.

Has anyone else noticed a shortage in your area? I can't believe it's been going on for so many months now.

It's hit & miss at my grocery store...some times no canned...sometimes the kinds my cat wont eat.

When they have the stuff my cat will eat I buy atleast 10 cans or more.

LOL! Funny, because I had a neck gaiter on cause I had to run to the store. I took it off when I sat on the couch a few minutes ago. As usual my cat was on my lap, so I put it on him and it made a nice body scarf. He liked it. So I guess he can repay the favor down the road.

I miss my furry friends, but I'm glad I no longer have to worry about their health, pay for their upkeep and/or track down THEIR FOOD TOO if there's an economic crisis

but you got me thinking - if pet food procurement becomes an issue, it might be a useful cottage industry to produce it yourself

Yes! My kitty, who has a leukemia virus - positive FELV kitty - wasn't supposed to make it through the night - that was 2 and a half years ago - very particular about what he'll eat - sheba cuts - even Chewy has been out of them - found some locally here and there - grab it when I can.....

Re: Is anyone else experiencing a cat food shortage?
I'm in Seattle, and we haven't had shortages of pet food since maybe April or May, but the Costcos around here have a limit of 2 per customer on the 60-packs of Friskies canned. Also, wet cat food always seemed to be on sale at Petsmart, but other than a small discount for buying by the case, it isn't anymore.

As part of my doomstash, I always keep a substantial backup supply of cat food on hand--it's always been at least three months, and right now I've got six months' worth.

I figure that if TSHTF, producing and distributing people food will be a higher priority than pet food, and I anticipate prolonged shortages. While I can eat all kinds of things, the cats depend upon me to provide what they need, and they can get sick from switching to new foods too quickly. So I've got them covered.

Just buy whole chicken thighs, and also chicken liver, heart, etc...and pressure cook them with plain water, no spices or anything else. (20 minutes cook after pot comes up to pressure) 21 minutes for frozen pieces

Feed to cat when cooled. Keep extra in frig. Simple.

This, my cat will only eat regular cooked chicken or tuna out of the can; he won't eat any canned cat food, just crunchy Friskies, his Greenies and Temptations for treats.

He won't drink milk either, but he will do cream or whipped cream, I guess he has a sweet tooth.

So he only gets wet food as a treat if I am cooking something that I am using the canned chicken or tuna for; but I would feed it to him if we ran into a bind.

The only way I can get him to eat wet food is it has to be the human canned chicken (plain) or tuna, sometimes he'll eat lunchmeat ham. He won't drink milk either, but he will do cream or whipped cream, I guess he has a sweet tooth.

If a cat owner feeds his cats nothing but cooked chicken and heart, liver, gizzard, etc....the cat will be much healthier than if the cat ate dry cat food pellets.

Re: Is anyone else experiencing a cat food shortage?
The pâté seems to be in great demand. That's al my cat likes when I occasionally get him canned food. He doesn't like the grilled, or chopped or any of that. Just pâté. And it always seems to be virtually out of stock. I managed to find a couple cans at Rite Aid the other day. Meijer's canned cat food shelves look like a ghost town every time I go there. Managed to find a single can of the pâté mixed in with some others by mistake. A find.

Dry food isn't a problem. No shortage of that from what I can tell.

My cat doesn't care for wet food. Only locks the gravy. I feed him Purina grain free. He's very healthy and drinks a shit ton of water every day.

Stores down here in Palm Beach County, Florida we’re out of Fancy Feast (mostly the pate) for over a month. It’s just now starting to show up on the shelves again. I messaged Fancy Feast to ask what was going on and all I got was this generic response:

“Thanks for asking. We're working hard to get shelves restocked with our recipes, and hope to have all of our recipes available for our fans as soon as possible. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience. Please let us know if you have any additional questions. We're happy to help!”

It's true in many areas..between people being home more and people getting a LOT more pets, the pet industry is having trouble keeping up with demand..food, grooming, vet care, etc.
