Why are the standards so low for lawmakers, given their power over, and responsibility for the entire nation?

Many entry level civilian jobs require a drug test and clean police record, among other credentials some lawmakers lack. On top of that, reportedly, some employers stalk social media sites regarding potential new-hires.

Why are such dregs of society running this country to the detriment of those whom pay their [handsome] salary? I know you know. We all know.

It needs to change.
