I’m freezing so bad I’m shaking and can barely move - power outage

Freezing to death in bedroom, meanwhile...gas cooker in kitchen and vehicle with full tank in drive. Death certificate reads...dumb fuck died!

A car battery and an inverter connected to the power on the appliance will work to operate your electric thermostats...

maybe instead of watching tv and news and shit...

people should start to hit the internet for more meaningful purposes...like learning what to do and what to have in a power outage in winter...

Some of these people may be elderly and/or disabled, maybe bed ridden, have a heart

did you actually try that.. I did that ONCE.. was not very effective at all. Not worth the effort. The pot does not increase the heat... but you could warm your hands on it I suppose.

i did mine a lot differently, first not on a carpetted floor for obvious reasons.

secondly, i used different materials, and due to my knowledge of thermodynamics, i was able to heat an entire condo including a fishtank during a bad winter outage in new england. using candles. it took a lot of candles and mylar sheets and tin foil.... no fish died, the apartment stayed reasonably warm. this went on for exactly 7 days, around 2011-2012 i wanna say.

You guys know how to make a butter lamp?

You open the side of the butter wrapper, dont remove it. Make a wick out of rolled paper towel and push it through the length of the pack of butter with a chopstick. Now make a few of those and light it up.

cans of sterno are really good to have but add water to whatever pot or pan you are using as a radiator, because it burns pretty damn hot.


edit- nevermind apparently they burn at 175f. wow so thats not hot at all

My bedroom thermostat in central TX reads 43 degrees!!! No power since Sunday night! We are existing in double clothing and blankets.

This is just unacceptable....what about elderly, infirm people, how are they doing???

Starting to worry about my stash of frozen food without electricity for nearly 48hours....guess I can put it outside on the driveway, maybe.

Try to remember any burning flame requires oxygen.
If the worse comes to worst improvise a stove on burning wood. Use anything that catches fire, eg. Trees useless paper will help you to start a fire, books furniture that is old, fences if they are made of wood. In Romania people burned their furniture in such winters. Coal would be fantastic!

Try a real candle, and a smaller pot... if the pot is too large, the heat will dissipate through the hole rather than heating the walls of the pot.

It works well, I know from personal experience. It works even better if you have a small portable gas oven with those propane cans, you just put the flower pot on top of the gas fire.

I did something similar end of last millenium... lots of candles in the dark room, and dinner plates upright against the walls reflecting the candle light... nice ambience.

Not an oven really... like a gas stove with those 4 gas flame rings on top, but portable, using small propane canisters. Easy to procure in Turk stores in Europe, and cheap. Around 20 E.

I bet all the hotels are booked solid because of power outages but worth a try.
