see texas just got some pretty cold weather. should you freak out? no. not more than usual.

there are people at risk, thats the old and infirm. elderly people. so you need to check on your neighbors when it really goes down. you dont want that on your hands, when something simple could have saved a fellow human.

Living in the subtropics, I can't conceive what it's like to be in those cold temps without heating. I would genuinely be in trouble without help. Lord Of Pain seemed a little too hopelessly ill prepared. I thought his description of hyperthermia was a nice touch to his larping. Perhaps he was being serious?

Controlled hyperventilating is a way to force the body to keep functioning properly.

If you're not doing anything to replace body heat lost, it's at surprisingly high temperatures that hypothermia can commence.

Me, I notice it's getting abit chilly when in the trailer it gets under 50 F. Typically in the summer I'll sleep between cotton sheets. In the winter, I'll typically sleep between blankets. If it were exceptionally cold, I might put a slab of foil-faced foam on top of the mattress, under the bedding.

Wearing dry socks and a hat is a must. With the socks, even if they aren't clean, as long as they are dry, that is what is important. And of course, wearing anything wool next to your skin is much better than cotton. Cotton pulls heat from the body, and wool wicks away moisture.

With the cell phone, if battery levels are already low, it is imperative to switch to ultra power saving, which shuts off the power hungry apps such as maps.

I'm in south Central Texas just north East of San Antonio.

3-4 days so far of very cold freezing weather. Snow usually doesn't stick around long here but it's day 5 and some snow on the lawn is still there and they are predicting more sleep/snow until Thursday morning.

My husband's been of work since Monday.

We have been so lucky so far. My old has Central heater is too old to run so we have been using 6 space heaters to stay warm and we haven't lost power or water yet. (Knock on wood) as I have tropical birds. I didn't know to drip the hot water faucet so we did loose just the hot water until we warmed up the heater closet a bit.

It's supposed to begin sleeting later so I staying up to see how bad it gets.

I believe it 100% ~ I see exactly what they are doing. Friends in Garland have had zero power too. I worked in the Dallas area 2 years & never saw any snow on the ground. On a few occasions the temps dropped as low as 25, but alway warmed up during the day. Currently this is weather “”warfare.” They will decline to report the true death toll, but common sense tells one its high.

There are millions without power, fireplaces or generators. Temps at zero & below... Insane! If I still worked in Dallas & power went out? I had no fireplace. You can’t drive out of the area or even the state... Snow, hazards & plunging temps ongoing = Death! All the stray kitties in Dallas County... Terrible to think about what had happened to them.

Turn every faucet in your house on to a trickle. This will keep pipes from freezing. Keep warm with lots of blankets.Some cars/trucks have 3 prong outlets to plug ext.cord into. This can power a space heater! Good luck!!

You're in the USA. You'll be fine.

Build a blanket tent inside your house (no joke) and everyone hang out in there. Body heat will work wonders.

The olden days hot water bottle.. today's pick up one of those tin water bottles fill with hot water.. no power use hot tap. Do not cuddle it will burn but wrap in towel or cloth. A large furry dog like most animals in cold weather snug up to get warm. I rented a unit was cold yeah ok 15deg.. had no heater so used gas oven, left door open pulled up a chair feet on oven door. Thank goodness I no longer live in NSW.
