She also has a lot of birdhouses. And another thing - don't leave your dogs outside (I'm blown away by how many people are still doing this). Goodbye, halcyon days... There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory mentioned, which states that this has already happened. |

I've kept my suet feeders full of peanut butter suet and the seed holders are all full. I have also put out a couple of plastic bins on their sides facing the house and put old blankets in them. Wish I had straw - that would have been much better than blankets, but so far, no stray cats or dogs or possum or whatever have used them. You could also use one of those bins with the lid and cut a hole in it to make a makeshift kennel. All HELPFUL suggestions welcome :) FEED THEM...I do everyday.....they are VERY HAPPY.....just throw it on the ground in a small area....and they won't fight.I feed Deer , Bear, Turkey , Fox, Rabbit , Hawk, about 15 different species of Birds...etc, etc ,etc... |

I have a bowl on the side of the porch with kitty kibble. I usually just get the cheap stuff for the outside cats. They don't mind (I think). Dogs eat it too LOL Goodbye, halcyon days... (OP) Strawberry Girl User ID: 79665715 United States 02/17/2021 12:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The birds around here empty every bird feeder I fill every day. They quickly went through 2 large sacks and I ran out this last weekend. The last 2 days they've been screaming at me in the backyard to refill them, but it's too damn cold to go anywhere to get more. I'll do it tomorrow though. I promise. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78687938 That's probably because you're one of only a very few who put out food. You don't have to have bird seeds. You can put out regular food or scraps. Anything with high fat content is the best thing to give them right now. You could smear some stale bread with peanut butter, crumble up some crackers into some peanut butter and roll it into little balls, fruit/veggies and/or peels. Pretty much anything, really. Thanks for feeding the birdies!!! Goodbye, halcyon days... I put out two large cakes and one is already gone. Will be putting out two more this weekend! Quoting: LaGata Yeah, I have had to refill my feeders a few times myself. They just can't find food in this temp. The ground is covered in most places and where it isn't covered, it's too frozen for them to forage for insects. Their lives are literally in the hands of thoughtful humans. Goodbye, halcyon days... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78687938 BTW, I wanted to add this cold is also affecting all the deer around here. I'm located on an off-grid survivalist's dream property here in Minnesota. It's covered with many dozens of apple and other fruit trees and hundreds of fruit shrubs, not to mention the hundreds of hardwood trees. The deer have made a huge mess of my backyard digging for apples under the snow. And they are all very young deer too. All the adults disappeared during the recent hunting season which must have ended now because the young deer are coming out of hiding now. But what a mess. Deer tracks all over the place. They don't even act all scared when they notice me noticing them any more. And I just moved here 4 months ago. Fortunately, all these cold days have been sunny, and that has helped a lot. |

What are you using for shelters? screwing 1x6 boards to the underside of the porch rafters making a nice nesting place for many birds. As much as I love all the birds here, they do carry diseases and parasites. I don't want them near my porch or on the house anywhere. I don't need a parasite invasion or bird poop all over the place. But there's many trees everywhere for them. I'm on a private residential 10 acres lot grandfathered into the middle of a huge forested state park and managed wildlife preserve next to 2 rivers. I'm surrounded by an abundance of wildlife. I think the birds will be fine without me, but I do want them nesting near but not on my home. It's the sheer number of deer I worry about though. Even after the recent hunting season, I'm still seeing a lot of young hungry deer searching for food this last week. Just across the river there's too many wolves so they issued hunting permits for I think a few hundred to be killed. I'm seeing a lot of coyote tracks on this side though. They follow the rabbits. The deer hang around all the fruit trees .. could be over a hundred on the property here, I've not yet counted them all. |
