You're very wrong, but also not quite wrong at all.

Eternal damnation exists if you make certain choices (typically surrounding lying to yourself to justify believing hurtful thoughts and bad behavior towards others out of selfishness) and then fail to forgive yourself and everyone else in your life when it is imperative that you do so.

Hell will last as long as your unwillingness to forgive lasts. You do it to yourself. God doesn't do it to you.

And let me tell you, it fucking SUCKS. It is the most terrifying thing a human being can go through. And the worst part is, you can get yourself lost in a psychological and energetic hell so painful, it can be very difficult to get yourself out rationally.

But, no. God doesn't put you in hell. You put yourself there. And the ones who adamantly believe they'd never be bad, stupid, or sinful enough to "go there" are the ones most likely to.
