Quoting: JAZZz50 Interstate highways could, in an emergency and only in some locations, be useful as "runways". They were not intended or designed for that purpose. The engineering necessary to create a useful "permanent" airstrip is not incorporated. South Korea has, alternately, specifically designed segments of their major highway systems to be used as runways. Those sections of the system, if you ever drive in a vehicle on them, are very clearly different in very noticeable fashion from the rest of the system. Markings, width, etc. differentiate the aviation suitable sections from the rest of the system.
