* kidney damage (that may or may not resolve or come on later...and again...what happens as folks don’t realize they were infected multiple times?)

Again the models show that more people have been infected than tested.... this next wave might be brutal just for that reason.

Preliminary data had U.S. deaths up 15% last year. The final number could be nearer 20%. That's a pretty significant jump. Plus you aren't taking into account people aren't living in normality due to the restrictions. If normality was still happening and no one was taking care to avoid the virus then it's reasonable to assume the deaths would be a lot higher.

And like CC was saying, the crisis is not simply about near term deaths. The long term issues for survivors is very real and can be debilitating.

There have also been a few cases that resolved, but doctors can’t pinpoint why. And not all were obese.

Based on the conversations.... there looks to be a big cohort compilation going on.... might get that study before summer.

The CA variant is worrisome. It is definitely spreading outside of CA (in fact, I believe it is spreading internationally). The news reports are very contradictory, with some saying it is more contagious and deadly than the original Sars-CoV-2, and others saying it isn't... but it is almost certainly what caused CA to go so apeshit during the last peak.

Yes, I understand those things can happen to people infected with COVID. They are an extreme minority.

What evidence do you have that it happens to people long term after the fact? None, that's what.

Half of my buddy's police department as well as fire department were infected last spring, they're all fine.

Yes, I understand that COVID could have randomly picked one of them to kill or permanently disable, but it didn't... and it's really likely that's the end of it for them.

They do things on a daily basis that most people who haven't had COVID aren't even in good enough shape to do.

You have zero evidence that people with mild infections will suddenly die 5 years from now.

Back from drain declogging ... was successful (on my second attempt -- I tried a few days ago, too) with a handheld drain snake down the grate, a long hook up the pipe, a longhandled grabber, and a fair amount of elbow grease. Came home smelling like Wordsworth! (In fact, I thought of him as I was mucking around in the nasty water with poop and rotting seeds.... yuck.)

I think CDC-ATL brings up an interesting question, put side by side with the many longterm sequelae we know exist for some patients (and the many articles CC and others have posted on this).... of course science doesn't yet have the answers to this question, but it is interesting to ponder why some areas seem to have a lot of people who fail to recover, whereas others don't.

In my personal circle, I now know a lot of people who have lost friends and relatives to this, and I personally know two longhaulers, and a few others who may turn out to be longhaulers. I'm thinking maybe certain variants are more likely to have longterm consequences. The CA variant seems to be pretty nasty -- though the science is so contradictory it's a bit hard to make much sense of it.

Let me throw this out there, just as a point of comparison. Many people who get Lyme recover just fine, especially with early antibiotics. Some seem to recover, but then relapse. Some people don't recover fully even with early antibiotics, and for some of us it becomes a lifelong disease. The science has been really skewed regarding Lyme (don't get me started on that) so it is hard to know the real percentages of people who become Lyme lifers, but it's added up to millions of us over the years.

At least with COVID, there's already a fair amount of attention being put towards the longhaulers, unlike with CFIDS, chronic Lyme, Fibromyalgia, and so forth (all of which are likely post-infectious or long-term infection syndromes). This is happening because an estimated 10 to 20% of infected people go on to develop long-haul COVID... and the numbers of chronically ill people will be staggering.

I was thinking today that I sometimes get lax about eye protection, mainly due to the fogging up issue that happens with glasses or goggles. A face shield is better, to a degree, though I get fogging on those, too.

I do wear eye protection when I go indoors in a public place, which is literally only when I go to the doctor or the pharmacy. Outdoors, I just avoid proximity to others.

CC -- thanks for the article on long-term sequelae. That really is my biggest fear with this. The fatalities are awful, of course - but I really see this leaving behind a huge amount of chronically ill people, which will cause all kinds of problems in terms of the workforce, burden on the healthcare system, etc. Not to mention, living with a chronic illness is no walk in th park, to which several of us can personally attest.

There's also the economic impact. I can't imagine how businesses (except essential services) are managing to survive at all. If work can be done remotely, business can continue.. but what about all the business that needs to be done in person?
