Respectfully, while you make valid points about MAD, that doctrine only works as long as everyone with the capability believes in the inevitability of the first letter of that acronym: "mutual." If one country with a nuclear arsenal begins to believe they can use their nukes to completely destroy the other side while sustaining "acceptable losses" themselves, then the nuclear deterrent goes out the window. Add the specter of nuclear terrorism where MAD doesn't factor into the equation at all and it starts to get a little frightening.

Then we have the sword of accidental nuclear war constantly hanging over our heads, and the thread holding it is 70 years old. We've had dozens of close calls where we've almost blown up the world and only survived to tell about it through sheer luck. That luck will eventually run out.

Finally, the number of people that have actually witnessed for themselves the destructive horror of a nuclear detonation is slowly fading. That makes those toys more enticing to a newer generation of morons who think they can be used without consequence.

I personally think the possibility of a nuclear war is higher now than it has been since the 1980s. It has nothing to do with the specific current situation in Ukraine, but a more general theory of the longer we go without a nuclear weapon being used and the more countries that obtain them, the higher the odds of one eventually being used.

Mi dos pesos.
 Quoting: Riff-Raff

The MAD policy has one serious flaw, which is just becoming apparent. It is based on the assumption that world leaders are sane and rational. This does not seem to apply in all cases.
 Quoting: Leaver

There is one other thing that makes me feel better. The military leaders and senior bureaucrats are not suicidal either.

Even if we had a Prez with dementia and he decided to launch, the military brass would not carry out the order.

I'm pretty sure there are sane leaders on the Russki and Chicom side as well.

I know that if a general went nuts and tried to nuke the other side without being attacked first, he would get fragged.

Ref terrorism, that is always a real concern. In fact, I am surprised it never happened before.

BTW, closest we ever came was in 1982 per the briefings I got. Andropov actually wanted to launch a first strike because he was sure that Reagan was going to nuke the USSR.

I related before how I spoke with a retired CIA agent who was recalled to duty on that occasion.

Reagan found out (thankfully, the CIA did their damn job for once) and sent a stern letter to the Politburo saying we would never surrender. Reagan said if they attacked, we would retaliate until there were no more Russians to kill.

The Politburo voted Andropov down on that idea.

At this time, no one is being invaded nor is the existence of any country threatened....except for Israel. The Iranians regularly threaten, but even the fanatics are rational enough to know what that would bring.

Nuke war over Ukraine? I doubt it. There may be chest beating, but conventional arms are sufficient for that conflict even if Putin tries to take the whole banana.
 Quoting: darth

We came closer in '82 than we did in '62??? I find that hard to believe. I know things were tense between Reagan and Andropov, and we had both Able Archer and KAL 007 in '83, but I thought it was in '62 that we were mere seconds away from a total nuclear exchange.
 Quoting: Riff-Raff

Good point. However, the Cuban Missile Crisis was something that could LEAD to nuke war. Our actions took the Rookis by surprise.

In 1982, Andropov proposed a BOOB Attack (Bolt Out O tha Blue) to take us by surprise.

BTW, in a real nuke war game, you ALWAYS go for the other guy's nuke forces FIRST. You need to disarm them, making sure you do NOT kill the leader.

You hold the cities and their people as hostages, i.e., "We wish to negotiate. It would be a tragedy if we had to nuke your cities now".

Lago, I try to only comment on subjects where I have some knowledge.

I studied nuke war strategy and how it is related to foreign policy at West Point. Later, I learned about the latest strategies when I worked in SDI (Reagan's Star Wars programs).

Despite the rhetoric, I think that the possibility of nuke war is pretty low.

MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction) never ended. Not only do the USA and Russia have the capability, Israel and China also have arsenals sufficient to prevent nuke attack.

I don't think Putin wants to commit national suicide to take over Ukraine. He can use conventional forces for that.

I don't think NATO or the USA want to get into a ground war, much less a nuke war, with Russia over Ukraine.

The Left in the USA may hate our country, but a nuke war would make them lose control. Nuke war means chaos and anarchy which are not what they want. Not to mention, the hundreds of nuke reactors that could go Fukushima in such a catastrophe.

I DO expect that Russia will take the parts of Ukraine that are populated by Russian ethnicities. NATO, et al, will complain and put on more sanctions.

However, sanctions have to limited or the Euros will run out of hydrocarbons.

Ref the subs, YES, they are a potent threat of retaliation against any foe. I would not expect all of them to survive a concerted effort by a foreign navy to take them out, but like you said, a single surviving sub is enough of a deterrent.

The major threat to the USA is from internal takeover. The enemy is inside the wire already.

My take, Vladimir Putin is testing Biden. The USA, with ONE and I mean ONE nuclear Ballistic missile submarine could destroy Moscow. Its not a secret that we have 14. We could destroy all the russian major cities in about 3 minutes. I know of what I say.

Stanislav Petrov: The man who may have saved the world

Thirty years ago, on 26 September 1983, the world was saved from potential nuclear disaster.

In the early hours of the morning, the Soviet Union's early-warning systems detected an incoming missile strike from the United States. Computer readouts suggested several missiles had been launched. The protocol for the Soviet military would have been to retaliate with a nuclear attack of its own.

But duty officer Stanislav Petrov - whose job it was to register apparent enemy missile launches - decided not to report them to his superiors, and instead dismissed them as a false alarm.

This was a breach of his instructions, a dereliction of duty. The safe thing to do would have been to pass the responsibility on, to refer up.

But his decision may have saved the world.

At the risk of opening myself to a bit of flaming I'd like to add a "joker" to the deck related to age.

Once upon a time, a long, long time ago we were all taught that there were these pesky things called facts. Facts were data points that, for the most part, we agreed helped us decide what reality was. We didn't always agree on interpretation but, in the final analysis, we worked our way back to the facts of a matter.

Somewhere along the line that changed.

More and more, and we see it here as well, there's been a subtle mutation which now suggests we must "respect and honor" what people think and how they feel. While from the standpoint of emotional intelligence that has some value, there as many instances where what someone "thinks and feels", to the extent it runs counter to the facts, is at best useless and at worst very, very dangerous.

The most obvious examples can be seen in what passes for the thought processes of some of our more clown car eligible politicians.

They either believe or pretend to believe that whatever they "think" somehow magically becomes reality. And if they write it or broadcast it, "voila", that thought or emotion now becomes a "fact".

It's one thing when an eight year old engages in this sort of magical transformation, it's quite another when it's done by people who are, at least chronologically, considered to be adults.

In my best Rod Serling voice...: "Consider if you will the following scenario. A group of "leaders" are engaged in a battle of opinions, separated from reality, about what to do about a foreign countries actions toward a putative ally..."

Bastetcat, thanks for asking. She seems to be ok. I'm going to get the name of my bil's vet and try to make an appt. It may be a tooth problem that I can't see. I give her canned and dry food. She eats from both. She LOVES gravy! LOL I used to give her the canned as a treat, but I give it to her every day now. She doesn't eat as much of the kibble anymore.

Turns out, getting vet appt.'s are pretty hard to get still. Covid protocols. They don't make as many as they used to. I've called a couple in town and one isn't taking new patients. The other didn't have any openings for several months.

I think I'm going to go ahead and give her a wormer. Can't remember when she had one last. It's been awhile.

...

Not sure who said this as the quotes are messed up but I would appreciate an elaboration... "The major threat to the USA is from internal takeover."

Lago, the reply was from me ref Ukraine.

Ref the "major threat", let me tell you what I personally experienced.

Back in 1984 I was an aerospace engineer working on Star Wars projects. The Air Force Association asked me if I would debate a college professor at Whittier College. I accepted.

My opponent, a Dr. Dillman, IIRC, of UC Riverside, made some outlandish claims during our debate. I was certain that he could not possibly believe what he had claimed.

Afterwards, I went over, shook his hand, and asked him, "So, you understand that the stated reason for the SDI program is to stop nuclear weapons from hitting the USA, right?"

He said yes.

I continued, "If there is a nuclear war with the USSR, do you want their nuclear weapons to hit our cities?"

He said emphatically, "YES!"

I was flabbergasted, "So, if there is a war, you want the USSR to win?"

He again replied loudly, "YES!"

I did not understand. I asked why.

He looked at me like I was stupid and yelled, "BECAUSE I AM A COMMUNIST!"

Lago, we have millions of people in the USA who HATE us and want the downfall of our country. That is what I am referring to.
