Quoting: Riff-Raff Respectfully, while you make valid points about MAD, that doctrine only works as long as everyone with the capability believes in the inevitability of the first letter of that acronym: "mutual." If one country with a nuclear arsenal begins to believe they can use their nukes to completely destroy the other side while sustaining "acceptable losses" themselves, then the nuclear deterrent goes out the window. Add the specter of nuclear terrorism where MAD doesn't factor into the equation at all and it starts to get a little frightening. Then we have the sword of accidental nuclear war constantly hanging over our heads, and the thread holding it is 70 years old. We've had dozens of close calls where we've almost blown up the world and only survived to tell about it through sheer luck. That luck will eventually run out. Finally, the number of people that have actually witnessed for themselves the destructive horror of a nuclear detonation is slowly fading. That makes those toys more enticing to a newer generation of morons who think they can be used without consequence. I personally think the possibility of a nuclear war is higher now than it has been since the 1980s. It has nothing to do with the specific current situation in Ukraine, but a more general theory of the longer we go without a nuclear weapon being used and the more countries that obtain them, the higher the odds of one eventually being used. Mi dos pesos. The MAD policy has one serious flaw, which is just becoming apparent. It is based on the assumption that world leaders are sane and rational. This does not seem to apply in all cases. There is one other thing that makes me feel better. The military leaders and senior bureaucrats are not suicidal either. Even if we had a Prez with dementia and he decided to launch, the military brass would not carry out the order. I'm pretty sure there are sane leaders on the Russki and Chicom side as well. I know that if a general went nuts and tried to nuke the other side without being attacked first, he would get fragged. Ref terrorism, that is always a real concern. In fact, I am surprised it never happened before. BTW, closest we ever came was in 1982 per the briefings I got. Andropov actually wanted to launch a first strike because he was sure that Reagan was going to nuke the USSR. I related before how I spoke with a retired CIA agent who was recalled to duty on that occasion. Reagan found out (thankfully, the CIA did their damn job for once) and sent a stern letter to the Politburo saying we would never surrender. Reagan said if they attacked, we would retaliate until there were no more Russians to kill. The Politburo voted Andropov down on that idea. At this time, no one is being invaded nor is the existence of any country threatened....except for Israel. The Iranians regularly threaten, but even the fanatics are rational enough to know what that would bring. Nuke war over Ukraine? I doubt it. There may be chest beating, but conventional arms are sufficient for that conflict even if Putin tries to take the whole banana. At the risk of opening myself to a bit of flaming I'd like to add a "joker" to the deck related to age. Once upon a time, a long, long time ago we were all taught that there were these pesky things called facts. Facts were data points that, for the most part, we agreed helped us decide what reality was. We didn't always agree on interpretation but, in the final analysis, we worked our way back to the facts of a matter. Somewhere along the line that changed. More and more, and we see it here as well, there's been a subtle mutation which now suggests we must "respect and honor" what people think and how they feel. While from the standpoint of emotional intelligence that has some value, there as many instances where what someone "thinks and feels", to the extent it runs counter to the facts, is at best useless and at worst very, very dangerous. The most obvious examples can be seen in what passes for the thought processes of some of our more clown car eligible politicians. They either believe or pretend to believe that whatever they "think" somehow magically becomes reality. And if they write it or broadcast it, "voila", that thought or emotion now becomes a "fact". It's one thing when an eight year old engages in this sort of magical transformation, it's quite another when it's done by people who are, at least chronologically, considered to be adults. In my best Rod Serling voice...: "Consider if you will the following scenario. A group of "leaders" are engaged in a battle of opinions, separated from reality, about what to do about a foreign countries actions toward a putative ally..." Larry, you make a valid point, and it's allowed me to rethink some phrasing I occasionally use. When I say "respect another person's opinion," I don't mean that if they are spouting bullshit they should be given a pass. I'm more referring to the debate process. Yelling and screaming at them that they are idiots, libtards, Nazis, fascists, morons, {insert a multitude of other insults here}, will accomplish nothing and they will simply dig in their heels further and stop listening to you. However, listening to their opinion, no matter how ridiculous, and then gently nudging them towards reality with, "Okay, I heard that as well, but I looked into it deeper and this is what I found..." is a much more effective method, in my opinion. Trust me, I'm much better at explaining it than doing it, but it's how I try to act as best I can. Sometimes I fail at it.
