Asteroid Apophis Approaching Earth

Asteroid apophis is currently approaching Earth and is bright enough to see with an amateur telescope and deep space CCD camera. I tracked it last night for about an hour and created the above time lapse. Later tonight it will pass in front of a relatively bright star designated HD 89707, a magnitude 7 star that is just at the limit of human vision from pristine skies. With binoculars or a telescope, amateur astronomers will be able to see the star blink out for a tiny fraction of a second as the asteroid passes directly in front of it over a narrow corridor that cuts through the United States.

Unfortunately Florida is left out of this one, but even without the occultation observation I was able to show the asteroid last night during my live stream.

Interesting! How often does it make this approach?

Is it a potentially troublesome asteroid/is there concern it may approach too closely one day?

Agreed. I was hoping Astro would return and post because I trust his work.

Idiots like those make it less likely and that frankly pisses me off.

Re: Asteroid Apophis Approaching Earth
Interesting choice for asteroid name?

Apophis (also known as Apep) is the Great Serpent, enemy of the sun god Ra, in ancient Egyptian religion. The sun was Ra's great barge which sailed through the sky from dawn to dusk and then descended into the underworld. As it navigated through the darkness of night, it was attacked by Apophis who sought to kill Ra and prevent sunrise. On board the great ship a number of different gods and goddesses are depicted in differing eras as well as the justified dead and all of these helped fend off the serpent.

Ancient Egyptian priests and laypeople would engage in rituals to protect Ra and destroy Apophis and, through these observances, linked the living with the dead and the natural order as established by the gods. Apophis never had a formal cult and was never worshiped, but he would feature in a number of tales dealing with his efforts to destroy the sun god and return order to chaos. Apophis is associated with earthquakes, thunder, darkness, storms, and death, and is sometimes linked to the god Set, also associated with chaos, disorder, storms, and darkness. Set was originally a protector god, however, and appears a number of times as the strongest of the gods on board the sun god's barque, defending the ship against Apophis.

I trust Astroshill because his name says 'tumorsta' backwards.

Therefore he wrote an algorhythm proving the moon landing was real. It's in his code. You can see it. Because he put numbers in there it proves it. Does it matter that the equation itself is arbitrary and circumlocutory? No?! Trust the tum. Derp.

You probably know this...

There is a man named Thomas Horn on youtube. He correctly prophesied that Pope Benedict would would retire. He even gave the year. He really went out on a limb on this publicly and shocked many [millions?] when it turned out true. He says Apophis will strike the earth on April 13, 2029.

Here's my question: Can't the determined course of an asteroid be altered by various factors? Thanks.

When Astro posts, I listen.

He's a straight shooter, not a bullshitter like Big Dick Ron or any of GLP's other various hokey Hollywood screenwriters.

I'm always interested in Astro's comments, but this thread may fit serious astronomers better than people into cheap thrills at a Six Flags theme park.

I prefer to be the former but, okay, I admit I get sort of caught up in the latter.

Re: Asteroid Apophis Approaching Earth
i have two questions,

1 can you see the asteroid belt with your telescope?

2 why doesn't the asteroid belt appear in the night sky as a ring reflecting the sunlight? does sunlight not reflect on the asteroid belt?

thx. :)

Question for you OP!

Other than the known influences that can alter trajectory (sunlight , gravitational pulls etc) , as remote the possibility might be , IS it possible for one asteroid to collide with another , this far in away from the belt?

Thank you.

Thanks Astro!

And yes, many factors can effect an asteroids path. The Earth and Moon being the biggest 2 factors in it's approach. Is the math NASA does 100% accurate in its projected path? No, which is why they give a little percentage of impact at the end of their statements about asteroid path projections.

Anything with a MOID less than 0.05 AU to earth and an absolute magnitude brighter than 22 is classified as a PHA. Doesn't mean it will actually hit anytime in the foreseeable future.
