"Potentially Hazardous Asteroids: NEAs whose Minimum Orbit Intersection Distance (MOID) with the Earth is 0.05 au or less and whose absolute magnitude (H) is 22.0 or brighter."

Anything with a MOID less than 0.05 AU to earth and an absolute magnitude brighter than 22 is classified as a PHA. Doesn't mean it will actually hit anytime in the foreseeable future.

Re: Asteroid Apophis Approaching Earth

Asteroid apophis is currently approaching Earth and is bright enough to see with an amateur telescope and deep space CCD camera. I tracked it last night for about an hour and created the above time lapse. Later tonight it will pass in front of a relatively bright star designated HD 89707, a magnitude 7 star that is just at the limit of human vision from pristine skies. With binoculars or a telescope, amateur astronomers will be able to see the star blink out for a tiny fraction of a second as the asteroid passes directly in front of it over a narrow corridor that cuts through the United States.

Unfortunately Florida is left out of this one, but even without the occultation observation I was able to show the asteroid last night during my live stream.

You probably know this...

There is a man named Thomas Horn on youtube. He correctly prophesied that Pope Benedict would would retire. He even gave the year. He really went out on a limb on this publicly and shocked many [millions?] when it turned out true. He says Apophis will strike the earth on April 13, 2029.

Here's my question: Can't the determined course of an asteroid be altered by various factors? Thanks.
 Quoting: 4JESU5

Thanks Astro!

And yes, many factors can effect an asteroids path. The Earth and Moon being the biggest 2 factors in it's approach. Is the math NASA does 100% accurate in its projected path? No, which is why they give a little percentage of impact at the end of their statements about asteroid path projections.

The gravity of the Earth and Moon is already factored into the calculations. That's not the issue. The issue are very minute perturbations to the orbit that occur over decades of time. The 2029 impact is already ruled out. There is a very slim possibility of impact in 2068. Phenomenal orbit places the asteroid over an astronomical unit away from the earth at the time of impact but the orbit is very uncertain that far out. The uncertainty is driven by the limits of our observational data on the asteroid and also by the limits of our modeling of very small long-term effects like the Yarkovski effect.

Question for you OP!

Other than the known influences that can alter trajectory (sunlight , gravitational pulls etc) , as remote the possibility might be , IS it possible for one asteroid to collide with another , this far in away from the belt?

Thank you.

Re: Asteroid Apophis Approaching Earth
Any asteroid that approaches so closely is a mining prospect.

Based on observations, it is thought to be an LL Chondrite weighing approx. 40,000,000 or forty million metric tons.

LL Chondrites are normally composed of iron, oxygen in the form of oxides, nickel, silica, chromium, and phosphates.

If it is a conglomeration of various objects that are gravitationally bound after impacts, it may have a more heterogenous makeup.

Note that iron + nickel + chromium can be used to make stainless steels. The silica can be used to manufacture windows. The uses of oxygen are obvious.
