Any alteration of the Apophis orbit however slight will be extremely significant. Aphophis' flyby of Earth in 2029 is currently projected to be only 23,000 miles from Earth. [link to earthsky.org (secure)] Impact would be about 6 times greater than Krakatoa. Also note that tsunamis from Krakatoa were 130 feet. So with an ocean impact waves could possibly reach 780 feet. A land impact could possibly release quake faults across the entire planet depending on location. Imagine if the asteroid hit Fukushima, Yellowstone, New Zealand right at the fault, Japan right at the fault, any Pacific ring of fire volcano or a major city cluster? Embrace the cognitive dissonance. |

Now, suck more dick. :bjob: So tired of these fucks. It sucks for good A/C's, because Mutt might stop A/C posting, can you blame him? The patriot Larper is,imho, one of his fan boys, who was banned as an A/C in his threads, so the fuckface logged in as a member and trolled him... What a fuckwit... Mutt got him to blow his cover...lol |

Quoting: darth Based on observations, it is thought to be an LL Chondrite weighing approx. 40,000,000 or forty million metric tons. LL Chondrites are normally composed of iron, oxygen in the form of oxides, nickel, silica, chromium, and phosphates. If it is a conglomeration of various objects that are gravitationally bound after impacts, it may have a more heterogenous makeup. Note that iron + nickel + chromium can be used to make stainless steels. The silica can be used to manufacture windows. The uses of oxygen are obvious. Ad astra If we mined it, it's mass would be changed, and probably hit us. I think we should mine in the asteroid belt first before we start mining near Earth asteroids. If we mine it, it will no longer exist! No more threat |

User ID: 78573643 United States 02/21/2021 10:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Interesting choice for asteroid name? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79422583 Apophis (also known as Apep) is the Great Serpent, enemy of the sun god Ra, in ancient Egyptian religion. The sun was Ra's great barge which sailed through the sky from dawn to dusk and then descended into the underworld. As it navigated through the darkness of night, it was attacked by Apophis who sought to kill Ra and prevent sunrise. On board the great ship a number of different gods and goddesses are depicted in differing eras as well as the justified dead and all of these helped fend off the serpent. Ancient Egyptian priests and laypeople would engage in rituals to protect Ra and destroy Apophis and, through these observances, linked the living with the dead and the natural order as established by the gods. Apophis never had a formal cult and was never worshiped, but he would feature in a number of tales dealing with his efforts to destroy the sun god and return order to chaos. Apophis is associated with earthquakes, thunder, darkness, storms, and death, and is sometimes linked to the god Set, also associated with chaos, disorder, storms, and darkness. Set was originally a protector god, however, and appears a number of times as the strongest of the gods on board the sun god's barque, defending the ship against Apophis. |

So many call him shill over and over even tho he provides solid evidence. The only thing I ever disagreed with him about was Venus being bright as fuck but I know he has to be right. And some will call me a shill for backing him up. The only thing I've ever found funny about him is that he rarely chimes in on any other topic here on GLP. Anyways thanks for what you do Astro. I personally hate to think about space and infinity as it sends me into an existential crisis but hey, keep doing you. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 77898480 United States 02/21/2021 11:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You probably know this... Quoting: 4JESU5 There is a man named Thomas Horn on youtube. He correctly prophesied that Pope Benedict would would retire. He even gave the year. He really went out on a limb on this publicly and shocked many [millions?] when it turned out true. He says Apophis will strike the earth on April 13, 2029. Here's my question: Can't the determined course of an asteroid be altered by various factors? Thanks. Thanks Astro! And yes, many factors can effect an asteroids path. The Earth and Moon being the biggest 2 factors in it's approach. Is the math NASA does 100% accurate in its projected path? No, which is why they give a little percentage of impact at the end of their statements about asteroid path projections. The gravity of the Earth and Moon is already factored into the calculations. That's not the issue. The issue are very minute perturbations to the orbit that occur over decades of time. The 2029 impact is already ruled out. There is a very slim possibility of impact in 2068. Phenomenal orbit places the asteroid over an astronomical unit away from the earth at the time of impact but the orbit is very uncertain that far out. The uncertainty is driven by the limits of our observational data on the asteroid and also by the limits of our modeling of very small long-term effects like the Yarkovski effect. In a mathematical since, the solar system is an unstable system. It will probably last for billions of years but eventually stuff will get flung out, fall into the sun or bump into something else. This was the motivation for the tree body problem. |
