There is a nice piece of software called 'Celestia' which you can actually enter the date and rotate around the earth/moon/sun in 3d (and the rest of the galaxy if you wish) and you can see how the shadow moves over the earth, pause, look at the positions etc. You can watch for yourself why it happens. [ link to celestia.space (secure)] If it has the eclipse shadow traveling from West to East then it is full of shit.
