you left out the orbit of earth in the equation.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78566342

That does not factor in because the moon travels with the earth, so you can consider it a single reference frame.

I tried to read everything but I didn't quite get what you meant by that.

The only thing that matters in my opinion is how fast the Earth rotates and how fast the Moon goes by that portion of its orbit where it's blocking at least some portion of the Sun from view on Earth.

If you think about it, the Moon is just able to cover the Sun when a total eclipse is happening. So for a rough estimate, we can calculate the moon's diameter times two for the distance the Moon is covering at least some part of the sun when viewed from Earth. So all we have to do is take the Moon's diameter times two and divide it by the speed per hour the Moon is traveling at and that will tell us the time it takes for the Moon to travel across the Sun.

So we'll take The Moon diameter and multiply it by two 3 474,2 km * 2 = 6 948,4 km and divide that by the speed of the Moon 6948,4 km / 3,700 km = 3,700 = 1,878 and that is how many hours roughly it would take for the Moon to go across the Sun if viewed from a single non-rotating point on Earth. The rotation of course makes the time a bit longer as the same point on Earth is traveling in the same general direction with the Moon.

So that's my take on it and I'm fairly sure that's in the ballpark for this type of an example. You can see how the two hours of partial eclipse is faster than the rotation of the Earth and that's why the eclipse moves from West to East.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78954816

The issue is this. A point on the Earth is travelling at 15 degrees per hour due to the rotation of the Earth, that is its angular speed. The moon in its orbit around the earth travels at 0.6 degrees per hour, again its angular speed. So if the Earth did not spin, the moon's shadow would certainly move from West to East, but since the Earth rotates through many more degrees per unit time than the moon in its orbit around the Earth, the Earth wins the race and therefore spins ahead of the moon's shadow, and therefore it will appear that the moon's shadow is traveling from East to West.
 Quoting: leader

But the Moon doesn't have to "win the race". It just has to go by the Sun. The Sun isn't that big and if you think about your field of view when looking up at the sky, the Sun doesn't take up many degrees of your vertical field of view. It actually takes about 0.5 degrees.

Now if the moon goes roughly 0.54 degrees of its orbit per hour it doesn't take long to pass by the Sun. You can actually do the same calculation as I did before with kilometers but with degrees (distance 0.5 * 2 divided by speed 0.54) and it's pretty close to the same answer as before.

You can see how going by the Sun in two hours or so would be much faster than the speed at which the Earth is rotating, right?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78954816

Wrong. Do this. Draw two concentric circles. The inner circle represents the earth's surface circle; think of it as the equator circle. And the outer circle is the moons path. And think of it as looking down at it from the north pole direction. Now draw a dot outside both of the circles to represent the sun. Now draw a line that connects the center of the two concentric circles with the dot that represents the sun. That line will intersect the Earth circle where the shadow begins and the outer circle where the moon is initially located. Now from that initial line draw two more lines that both go threw the center of the concentric circles with one line 0.6 degrees counter clockwise from the initial line and the other that is 15 degrees counter clockwise away from the initial line. At the beginning of the eclipse, the shadow of the moon is where the initial line that you drew intersects the Earth's circle as I have previously said. In one hour, that point on the Earth's surface has traveled to where the 15 degree line intersects the Earth's circle, while the moon is located where the 0.6 degree line intersects the moon's orbit circle. Now draw a line that goes through where the 0.6 degree line intersects the moon's orbit circle and the sun, and continue that line down to the Earth's surface. Notice that that line intersects the Earth's circle to the West of the place on the Earth's circle where the shadow started. Therefore the shadow has traveled from East to West.
 Quoting: leader

You didn't count the fact that the Sun is pretty far away and that makes the Moon's shadow travel in relation to Sun's position. In your concentric circles example you would have to draw a dot pretty far away from the circles representing the Sun and draw the shadow of the Moon by starting from the far away Sun, then going through the Moon's orbit circle position and on to the Earth's surface circle. Then the shadow will go faster than any point on Earth's surface.

The light source being far away is irrelevant. The fact that the object causing the shadow, the moon, is close is what matters. Face the fact, I just proved that for an eclipse where the shadow travels along the equator the shadow will travel from East to West. And I'm sure the same can be proven for all other eclipses. But if it isn't true for all other eclipses, then at least for many others it should be true for. But all recorded eclipses from what I am aware of are west to east. We got some trouble in paradise folks.

You are just saying shit without proving anything. Give a proof of what you are trying saying, or don't say it at all. You say a flaw in my proof is that I didn't take into account the sun is far away, and then when I call dog shit on that, you say oh wait, the sun being far away actually doesn't matter bwahaha. My proof, together with the fact that no one is yet to point to a flaw in it, should be enough for you to start entertaining the possibility that the video the OP originally posted might in fact be truth. So unless you have a coherent proof of what you are trying to say, stfu because you are a waste of my time.

I've been trying to be nice to you and tried to explain this in many different ways. It's basic math and probably all of the other people reading this thread have gotten it by now. If the Moon goes by the Sun in two hours when viewed on a single point on Earth that should be enough of an evidence to you that because of the distances between the Earth, the Moon and the Sun it's impossible for the rotation to be faster than how fast the shadow of the Moon is traveling on the surface of the Earth.

I'll give one more. Here's a picture in scale of the Moon and the Earth:
[link to upload.wikimedia.org (secure)]

Now picture the Sun way to the right and how the Moon just barely covers it when viewed from a single point on the Earth. Now picture the Moon traveling its diameter or better yet two in up or down direction. You can draw lines in your mind from the far right and see The Sun isn't covered anymore by any point on Earth. So if it only takes a few hours for the shadow to move across Earth's surface it's faster than the rotation.

You should be able to figure this out.

You are saying absolutely nothing here, all imprecise garble bwahaha. As indicated by my proof, the predominant cause of the motion of the moon's shadow, assuming the space balls theory is true, would be the earth's rotation, not the moon's motion. The earth's rotation contributes an East to West shadow motion component with a speed of 15 degrees per hour, and the moon's motion contributes a West to East shadow motion component with a speed of only 0.6 degrees per hour. The end result is an East to West motion with a speed of 15-0.6=14.4 degrees per hour in the East to West direction. All of your garble about the width of the sun blah blah is irrelevant because the model in my proof tracks the centers of the of the Earth moon sun, which in fact will track the center of the shadow which is a good approximation. I would like to say the same to you, that you should be able to figure this out, but I actually don't think you can bwahaha. So what's next from you, more imprecise layman garble? Oh boy, joy for me, I just can't wait. Bwahaha

Why do eclipse tracks move eastward even though the Earth rotates from west to east?

Because the Moon moves to the east in its orbit at 3,400 km/hour. Earth rotates to the east at 1,670 km/hr at the equator, so the lunar shadow moves to the east at 1,730 km/hr near the equator.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78954816

Bwahaha
 Quoting: leader

At this point I'm wondering if you are trolling, since this should be pretty easy to understand and there are multiple people telling you in multiple ways why and how this happens.

If you don't actually understand it and are not trolling here are a few videos more I hope you will be able to look at and maybe it will become clear:

Why do eclipse tracks move eastward even though the Earth rotates from west to east?

Because the Moon moves to the east in its orbit at 3,400 km/hour. Earth rotates to the east at 1,670 km/hr at the equator, so the lunar shadow moves to the east at 1,730 km/hr near the equator.

I have said this before, the actual speeds of the objects are not what matters, what matters are their angular speeds. Draw three concentric circles and draw a wedge into it. Consider two planes flying, one on the outer circle and one on the next to outer circle; both planes flying at the same speed. The idea here is to consider how long it takes each plane to cover the distance on the inner circle between the two places the wedge intersects it. Clearly, the inner circle plane will take less time to do this than the outer circle plane. Therefore, what matters in the case of the eclipse is not the speed of the moon and the speed of the rotation of the Earth, it is their angular speeds; for the eight hundredth time bwahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!

bro, you got garbage ok? I proved to you that, assuming the space balls theory is true, the shadow should be travelling from East to West, just like the video posted by the OP stated. All you have is garble and fake science deep lie video bullshit shoved into your face by bad actors. Now either debunk my proof, or capitulate and admit that there might be something to that video the OP posted.

I have already explained this to you. Even though the outer plane takes more time to cover the same ground its shadow on the inner most circle moves faster than the plane moving on the middle circle. You have take sun into account and how shadow is formed on Earth's surface. It's really not that hard if you just look at the videos and try to understand it.

I am assuming this is the video you are referring to, and I have already addressed this video; I referred to it as full of shit. The center of the moons shadow will always be found by drawing a line through the centers of the sun and moon and extending it to the Earth. And the speed of it will be the same as the angular speed of the moon which is 0.6 degrees per hour in the West to East direction end of story. But this speed is overrun by the Earth's rotation angular speed of 15 degrees per hour, end of story. The video is lying to you, much like everything else lies to you; for example the TV, the news, movie stars, etc...

Now if you want me to take you seriously you will have to either debunk my proof, or back your statement with a proof, your statement being:

"Even though the outer plane takes more time to cover the same ground its shadow on the inner most circle moves faster"

This is what is called in the scientific community "pulling something outta your ass" bwahahahahaha (unless you can prove it)

You can try this yourself by taking a flashlight, putting it on and pointing it at a wall from some distance away. Now take your finger and run it across the beam of light. Does the shadow of your finger on the wall go faster than your finger?

Yes it does.

That's essentially the same mechanic that makes the shadow of the moon go faster on the surface of the Earth than what the rotation speed of the Earth is.

Your experiment is flawed. The proper experiment would be to take a flash light and put it on the other side of the room. Now get five feet away from the wall where the light rays from the flashlight are now approximately all parallel. Now take your finger and move it. You will see that its shadow will move at the same speed as your finger.

This is getting ridiculous now; are you some kind of a paid shill directly from the underworld paid to try and keep their ball earth hoax from being discovered? bwahahahahaha
