One would have to wonder what is the logical reasoning behind spending billions of dollars on "space exploration" of a DEAD planet known to be uninhabitable, bathed in deadly radiation and practically devoid of atmosphere, with the national debt having increased over 40 percent in the last 5 years.

But the NASA contractors and the politicians they bribed are doing just fine.

I'm waiting for them to try to fly that stupid little drone in an atmosphere 3% as dense as Earth's at sea level. Somehow helicopters on Mars won't require air density to operate.

Comparison to Mars

The lack of humidity, rain, and light pollution together produce a dusty, rocky landscape.
In a region about 100 km (60 mi) south of Antofagasta which averages 3,000 m (10,000 ft) in elevation the soil has been compared to that of Mars.

Owing to its otherworldly appearance the Atacama has been used as a location for filming Mars scenes, most notably in the television series Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets.

In 2003 a team of researchers published a report in which they duplicated the tests used by the Viking 1 and Viking 2 Mars landers to detect life and were unable to detect any signs in Atacama Desert soil in the region of Yungay.

The region may be unique on Earth in this regard and is being used by NASA to test instruments for future Mars missions.

The team duplicated the Viking tests in Mars-like Earth environments and found that they missed present signs of life in soil samples from Antarctic dry valleys, the Atacama Desert of Chile and Peru, and other locales.

However in 2014 a new hyperarid site was reported. María Elena South, which was much drier than Yungay and thus a better Mars-like environment.

Towards Atacama near the deserted coast you see a land without men. There is not a bird, not a beast, nor a tree, nor any vegetation.

In 2008 the Phoenix Mars Lander detected perchlorates on the surface of Mars at the same site where water was first discovered.

Perchlorates are also found in the Atacama. Associated nitrate deposits have contained organics, leading to speculation that signs of life on Mars are not incompatible with perchlorates.

The Atacama is also a testing site for the NASA-funded Earth–Mars Cave Detection Program.

Look it up, the geology is IDENTICAL to what is shown on the Mars rover images.

Supposedly NASA tested their mars rover instruments there, one has to wonder what the usefulness of testing instruments in a totally different enviroment would have, considering it's 300 degrees hotter, not bathed in ionizing radiation, and has 100 times the atmospheric pressure Mars does.

The counter rotating rotors do increase lift, there is a YT vid of it flying in the NASA vacuum chamber, in our gravity. Not good enough, they had to counter weight the thing to compensate for Mars grav. Can't say there was a vacuum pulled or that it wasn't CGI, but it looked real enough. Actually what you are looking at on Wikipedia is EXTRAORDINARY photos of the Atacama on the rare occasions it rains.

Take a look at these:

Close-ups I've seen of the custom machined rotor linkages and mechanisms would have sent a toy company to the poor house. Only NASA could afford 'that' kind of toy for sure.

Show me clouds in any of the mars orbital images, there are tens of thousands of them and I've never seen a cloud in one.

Creating, Weaponizing, and Detecting Deep Fakes

The past few years have seen a startling and troubling rise in the fake-news phenomena in which everyone from individuals to nation-sponsored entities can produce and distribute mis-information.

The implications of fake news range from a mis-informed public to an existential threat to democracy, and horrific violence. At the same time, recent and rapid advances in machine learning are making it easier than ever to create sophisticated and compelling fake images. videos, and audio recordings, making the fake-news phenomena even more powerful and dangerous.

I will provide an overview of the creation of these so-called deep-fakes, and I will describe emerging techniques for detecting them. [joint work with Ph.D. student Shruti Agarwal]

Hany Farid is a Professor at the University of California, Berkeley with a joint appointment in Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences and the School of Information.

His research focuses on digital forensics, image analysis, and human perception. He received his undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics from the University of Rochester in 1989, his M.S. in Computer Science from SUNY Albany, and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1997.

Following a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT, he joined the faculty at Dartmouth College in 1999 where he remained until 2019. He is the recipient of an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, and is a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors.

I don't think there will ever be a concrete checker for fakes.. as soon as we develop one, the other side will come along and beat it with some novel method. Like he said, an arms race.
