"Deep-sea" Bitcoin diving with Quantum Computers
There's long been a worry in the cryptocurrency world about network integrity in the face of quantum computing developments.

The biggest fear is generally the dreaded "51% attack" where a rogue actor monopolizes over 50% of the network's computing power in order to "steer" blockchain completion to a different goal (i.e.; one which favors the attacker.) There are a number of ways to attempt this, and I won't get in to the gory details of mempools and UTXOs...

This attack, even with quantum computers, is still highly unlikely, as an attacker only has about 10 minutes to do so...before democratic actions on the network would likely attempt to identify and remove the rogue culprit.

There is a different attack vector which is more plausible, though still unlikely. This attack is more of an "offline" activity and isn't limited to a small timeframe.

One could potentially attempt to brute-force "old" P2PKH wallets sort of like searching for sunken treasure. The Elliptic Curve cryptography used for public and private keys are one of the only really viable attack points for (future) quantum computers.

Not all wallets would necessarily be susceptible to this brute-force attack, but ones which have flaunted their public key (at least once) could be at risk.

But imagine some of the lost wallets with thousands of BTC (and also BCH) sitting there like sunken ships waiting for discovery. :)

At some point, there will be lost wallets with literally trillions of dollars on them... Wouldn't a collaboration of governments be at least a little bit interested in trying to collectively crack some of the more vulnerable ones? hmm

I was reading some of your post yesterday.

Very interesting stuff honestly.

This argument has been debunked ad nauseam. Quantum computers aren't designed to crack encryption. And even if t hey did get to that point then cryptos would simply go to quantum proof algos.

dayum!
like money burned up in a fire but still recoverable.
i know how to break quantum but i dont know how to fix her, thats on katz.
quantum runs would be the way to dig deep and fast.i just dont know enough qbout btc to really help.i dont know what scrip they are running or what keys are other than its crypto.
crypto only has standing if its not cracked and dwave can probably crack it and thus dwave could possibly deep dive and grab the last recoverable.
if it can and the bandwidth is available.a quick hit should tell if its possible.

like taking a chance on a water hole having fish so you quickly drop a hoola popper on the water to see if theres something there.

Ad nauseum? Not quite.

But of course, quantum-proof algorithms are currently being used or are in development in many parts, but ECDSA is still a QC risk...the only one.

I guess I was curious about "back protecting" old wallets, I suppose.

no freakin way dude.i crashed ms headquarters last month without even trying!
you guys know to be careful of backdooring me.those dimwits in seattle had no clue.
you walk lightly around my stuff.i have dangerous code on hand but i only bring out excaliber for nat sec request from sec def.
ms wasnt my fault.i didnt know they were there.
remember ft bragg.trump jumped all our asses over that.
im not about to hurt dwave in any way.i may rub their nose in it on occasion but thats one machine that i love beyond words.

Quantum would have an easier time accessing the money in the banks than Bitcoin

Bitcoin is small potatoes in comparison

Any quantum computer that's going to break even ECDSA is going to require many thousands of qubits...and one hell of a good error rate.

But, it is still theoretically achievable in a number of years, so this will be something worthy to watch.
