A 787 has three variants.

[link to modernairliners.com (secure)]

They can seat 242,280, or 330 passengers. The first plane went from Newark to Tokyo non stop, and he said it was really empty.

The second plane went from Tokyo to Bangkok, 5 hours. I don't know if it could hold the 242 or 280 or 330. But, it had....

5- FIVE! passengers. It had more staff than passengers.

It isn't the ticket cost, the flight sounded cheap to me. 1000 bucks round trip...a few years ago it was 2,000 round trip just to Tokyo.

Five people on a plane that holds well over 200. If we don't lift all the lockdowns, I really think the economy is finished.

Anyway, he's been lined up to teach English in a school up north for months, and finally he was able to get in. Two weeks quarantine and then hopefully he'll be working.

It's a good thing there weren't more people on that plane ...

If there were each passenger might have had to share THEIR private exclusive individual bathroom. Can't be more than one person for each bathroom on an airplane can we?

I've been to Bangkok dozens of times (it's a hub for SE Asia). I'd go there, then get a flight to Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, etc on a discount air. I'd usually got a rt ticket with the return date open. Then when I wanted to leave I'd call and book a seat. The planes were so full that one time I had to wait a month before I could get a flight back to lax. And it had a 17 hour layover in the Tokyo airport, I couldn't even leave. Flights were always full.

I'm going to call bullshit. They would never fly a plane with only 5 passengers, they'd cancel the flight.

Yeap total BS. Thailand is only doing charter flights and a 2 week quarantine etc.... Very expensive they are ripping any potential old horny dudes off big time. SO I guess your son is a sex tourist as Thailand is the sex tourist capital of the world.

Re: My son just flew from Newark to Bangkok yesterday/today on a two 787s. Guess how many passengers were on the plane.
Freight is still in the belly of the plane ... and they are probably charging a PREMIUM for it now since so few flights are running on the International Routes. The flight may be close to break even just from the freight charges.

There is also a clause in most of those international route authorizations that the airline HAS TO USE IT ... OR THEY LOSE IT - FOREVER!! Many of the international flights done over the last year have only flown for that reason - usually just the minimum number of flights called for in their route authorization agreement.

If air traffic returns the airline doesn't want to have lost out on it's ability to fly to and from Thailand, a very profitable set of flights ... so they may be willing to suffer losses on those flights for now so as to keep their route authorization from the Thai Government.

Lol, it's kahtoey (I think that's how it's spelled). Never did see what guys saw in them. Surprising how many body builder types you'd see around there with ladyboys. Weird. But, flights to Cambodia are super expensive, much easier to fly to bangkok (it's a hub) and then get a nok air or whatever to your destination.

I have'nt been there for 6-8 years.

I had a flight one time where I was the only person on the plane.
I forget the plane model, but it was a decent sized plane. Maybe a 737. I was sitting up front and the pilot asked me to sit toward the rear to balance the plane. It was a dead leg return flight from somewhere in S Texas to Houston.
