pre covid we could get components in 2 weeks.
during covid that went to 12 weeks.
since jan 21 some components have gone to 36 months!
certain chips, capacitors and relays.
Our company have been trying to find alternatives but we get the same result from many countries.
Our company cannot survive with these delays as well as many others.

Re: something huge going in the electronics sector
My best guess: We're hitting the Seneca Cliff and our energy returned on energy invested ratio is dropping below 5.

That is 5 units of energy are delivered to the economy from 1 unit invested.

Since the government realizes this, they are accumulating items that require a high amount of energy to produce yet their price doesn't reflect the amount of energy. There could be several reasons for this, primarily credit that is issued and then continually rolled by lower interest rates.

They created this mountain of debt once the EROEI started dropping, so that it looked like our standard of living wasn't dropping but it was. Because the economy is based on energy, not the fed's magic monopoly money.

If you don't have energy you don't have any economy, period. You could issue a quadrillion dollars in debt but if you had no energy you would have no economy.

If so, that means they are preparing which is actually a good sign in that at least they recognize there is something seriously wrong with our economy other than academic bureaucrat's running the monetary system.

This post could use attention for i think its kinda in line with my guesses. Will continue to read the rest of the posts, but its fair to say it might be a precautionary economic movement. Such in a way that by preparing, that mitigated damage of unforeseen events are actually in alignment with a goal that establishes peace among all of the land. Then again the drones idea seems really worth interests too. All in all, mars aint that special.

Re: something huge going in the electronics sector
Semiconductors have become a key component of National Defense. It's rapidly moving to become the most important part of National Defense.

If your chips can make calculations quicker and more accurately than your enemies it can potentially give you a decisive advantage.

Right now Taiwan Semiconductor is the most important company in the world. Their chip technology is leading the industry. Companies like AMD design their own chips but have TSM make their chips for them. Intel makes their own chips and their technology isn't on par with TSM. That is a big reason Intel is struggling and AMD is the new king.

If China made a move against Taiwan and took control of TSM they would likely become the dominant military force in the world. The US would probably bomb the hell out of TSM manufacturing facilities.

TSM is building chip production facilities in Japan and the US, but it takes about 2 years to build a facility that can produce cutting edge chips.

Additionally, the US is starting to focus on improving domestic chip production. We will probably need to pass TSM and their chip production technology in the next decade (and that is probably being generous).

I own TSM stock and expect big things from them in the future. I don't think it has really caught on. TSM makes the best chips currently They will make the best chips next year and probably at least a couple years after that.

With National Defense becoming such a key market in addition to 5G, automobile AI and the Internet of Things all exploding they are going to be in an excellent position for huge sales and growth for years.

The US needs to catch up quick, even if Taiwan is a strong ally. We can't outsource that tech for much longer and we can't be second best.

I've been trying to buy some 5th wheel hitches. Most new trucks come with holes already in the bed. Ford Chevy, Ram, Toyota and Nissan all take different ones....don't ask me why they didn't standardize them..... Anyhow I get on with my rep and ask what's the holdup....his reply....We don't have any raw steel. That was 3 months ago. Just steel. Nothing special.

Good article
 Quoting: twentytwelve

very good article - lots of cars! They need to meet strict requirements and qualification as well. the thing that worries me the most is if there is a qualification problem with 7nm... Perhaps that is why Intel hasn't started production at that node? TSMC rules the world when it comes to wafer fabrication. US has a lot of catching up to do, if they ever decide to build Fabs here. If China takes over Taiwan, they could strangle the US semi market... War would come from it.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76742805

The shortage is due to the shutdown. When the auto market only makes 13% of the chip demand, a lot of auto manufacturers shat the bed & canceled chip orders, this swung them to the "back of the queue" & inturn there was a huge demand for laptops, screens, cpu's etc. from all those who were now 'stuck working from home'. The chip manufacturers won't ramp up production because they know it's a short term issue. Companies like Samsung stock piled chips at the onset of the pandemic

They do. It is still just a computer. And all computer have one weakness. EMP. Two transforms can fuck these things up for miles.

These are no good in war. It only takes one dude to take out a lot of very costly toys
 Quoting: bonehowler the white wolf

Depends on who's making them.

EMP-hardened electronics is a real thing... as is AI (swarms)... and, also, compact, energy-efficient (pulsed) laser systems.

Put it all together, and you've got yourself a literal army (a swarm) of millions of unstoppable mini drones that can blow (cut through) the brain of every single (unprotected) soldier on the battlefield in a matter of seconds.

Once there are no soldiers to operate all the military hardware... who's going to stop what follows next?

So... where are those electronic components really going to?

Switzerland?

It is NOT the US military getting all those parts ... since the US military/industrial complex does NOT have the manufacturing capacity to use all of those parts in a short time frame.

MORE LIKELY China is going on a behind the scenes Defense Buildup, probably DRONES.

A MASS of tens of thousands of Drones that just kept coming and coming and coming would overwhelm Taiwan in short order since they would be unable to refuel planes without them being destroyed on the ground ... AND ... it would be hard to move equipment around with the sky filled with drones looking for targets.

DRONES are the GAME CHANGER NEW WEAPON for the next war. So far there is no good DEPLOYED defense system that can stop them either.
