These spiders are so cool! I never remember seeing them in the US, and I’m an avid nature observer! Imagine a spider that holds a little net and throws it over it’s prey! Here is mine: [imgur] [ link to i.imgur.com (secure)] [ link to i.imgur.com (secure)] [ link to www.youtube.com (secure)] [ link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] “ Deinopis, also known as net-casting spiders, gladiator spiders and ogre-faced spiders,[2] is a genus of net-casting spiders that was first described by W. S. MacLeay in 1839.[3] Its distribution is widely tropical and subtropical. They catch their prey using a specially spun "net". The name is derived from the Greek δεινός (deinos), meaning "fearful", and opis, meaning "appearance", referring to their ogre-like faces. The spelling "Dinopis" is also found, but is regarded as an "unjustified emendation".” [ link to www.nationalgeographic.com (secure)] “ Whoever named the ogre-faced spider was clearly impressed with its gargantuan eyes, monster-like orbs that spot prey in the dark. As it turns out, this nocturnal arachnid is notable for another sense entirely: Hearing. A new study says the spider can hear a surprising range of sounds from more than six feet away, thanks to sensory organs—on its legs.” |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79368329 Probably! If you watch them for very long, you can see they’re very thoughtful about how they do their web. The path we go walking on here has these huge spiders that make huge webs right across the path. If you knock it down, they start cleverly putting the web up and to the side. They make these anchor threads that can then be cut once the rest of the web is built. |
