Anonymous Coward User ID: 78003522 United States 02/28/2021 07:34 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Okay... So I looked up the price on these "tiny homes", and they start at $48k. You would still need to buy or rent land, and do foundation prep. So you are in for at least 60k. At that price, you can buy a nice, traditional home, with 2-3 actual bedrooms, in "flyover country". It may need some aesthetic updating, but you can work on that yourselves over time. And there are great views to be had. Most of these millennials, when they do find work, are now relagated to online labor and meetings. Meaning they can work from anywhere. People are stupid. |

As the story goes, in a post-pandemic world, the downturn has crushed the restaurant industry. Many youngsters are either collecting government checks or finding other jobs or attempting to retrain for a new career. As home prices soar (no thanks to Fed. Chair Powell), housing affordability has become out of reach for many. That's why Ikea, yes, the affordable furniture store that sells Swedish meatballs, is now marketing tiny homes for broke millennials. The tiny home crazy has been gaining momentum in the last decade as wealth inequality, driven mainly by the Federal Reserve, leaving most of the wealth concentrated in just a few hands, has resulted in the middle class's decimation. People are downsizing left and right and opting for tiny homes. Ikea launched the Tiny Home Project to capitalize on this trend. The 187-square-foot structure, or what could be viewed as a trailer, but commonly known as a "tiny home" to hipsters, is equipped with renewable, reusable, and recycled materials for inside furnishings, solar panels on the roof, running water, kitchen, and a ductless heat pump and air conditioner unit. Say goodbye to the nice size homes of the past and say hello to the new single wide trailer livin might be a good bugout home! |

You can get a house kit to build a 1200 square foot house for 50K. |

Not worth the efforts involved for upkeep, and when your neighbors suck, so much for your peaceful sanctuary space. I’ll take a tiny house with deer as my neighbors, thanks. That is not “affordable housing” for what it is. For $25000, you could have a traditional RV with more square footage than IKEA’s hipster version. Also, you still have to find a place to park it and pay lot rent which can be anywhere from $500-2000/month depending on where you are. I’ve watched a few of those tiny house shows on TV and I’m always amazed that these people think they’re getting such a great deal spending $150,000 for 350 square feet worth of trailer. Maybe they’re all from California, but in many states, you can still have a 1500 sf, 3 bedroom house for that money. I wouldn't mind having one of those on some property out in the country somewhere. Sure, but that’s not the point. They’re selling these as primary residences for poor people, not vacation homes for people who can pay cash, and using the eco hook to guilt young people into buying something that’s 2-3 times the price of comparable structures that have been sold for decades. I have posted about this for years now. They have been promoted relentlessly. A young girl, tragically, loses her father. To honor his memory, she "decides" to build a tiny house. (the feelgood stories are important to getting women to accept them. ditto the woman video "don't hate on me because i live in a tiny home") The media decided it for her by promoting this crap. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78349802 You know eventually that will become expensive too, especially if it becomes "trendy". People love trendy. There are people in California who rent "pods" as rental units. The pods consist of bunk beds with 20-30 people per room. You get a bed and share one toilet. Cost? $1200 per month. As so far as the tiny homes, 187 sq feet is minuscule. 187 sq feet = a square box that is < than 14' length by 13.5' width (14 x 13.5 = 189). |

And now, they’re gonna trade that $1200 pod for a chattel loan on the trailer with a 5-year term with a $1000/ month payment and add in California lot rent of $1500-2000/month. I see a lot of squatting in Walmart parking lots coming if any of these kids are foolish enough to buy one of these things. [link to www.foxnews.com (secure)] Backyard tiny homes can range in price from $40,000 to more than $200,000 depending on the size, number rooms and amenities, while more basic tiny homes can cost … This was the search response. What the hell...200,000, for that. Tiny homes were originated for retirees to park their home on a small plot of land and live there when not traveling so as to avoid lots of real estate taxes. They were also designed for new couples looking for a living space that would allow them to save for the future. They were paid in full and could be parked on parents property in some instances. You can build from scratch quickly and low cost. The idea was to be low cost for a temporary house that could be upgraded in the future, or abandoned for use as a type of "inlaw" housing once the original occupants had reached their goal. It is a great idea, but this is not it. IKEA IS A RIP OFF AND NOBODY SHOULD FALL FOR THIS! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 78445863 United States 02/28/2021 09:07 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think we will find more and more boomas & gexers sharing homes. They like their larger homes and big lots, and more are single than ever before, so bring in some older roomies. I'm a younger booma and still working, but I'm sitting here with a 3700 sq ft home and 4 bedrooms, a second kitchen in the basement. Once I retire, I am going to seek out a couple of other mature adults to share a couple of the bedrooms. I figure $600 a month $700 if they want the use of the garage. They won't be using much more in utilities as water and trash are included in our POA and I have to heat/cool anyway. So I would clear maybe $1100 or $1200 per month and would still have one additional room on the main floor for my guests. I wouldn't report it as income, either. LOL! Between that, a pension, and SS and I will be making almost as much retired as I make working. If I retire at 62 & get a pension, but work part-time for a few years until I get to closer to 67 (my full retirement age), I will up my Social Security check amount. We all have to get creative these days. It would benefit me and it would certainly benefit the renters - beautiful vew, neighbors to socialize with, gardens to putz in, and it doesn't cost them an arm and a leg if they are on a budget. My house is newer and well insulated, so my heating and air bills are never over $200 per month. Why sell and move to a smaller place that might be more expensive to keep up? It's an open floor plan and is very easy to clean. There is really no reason to move until I basically cannot drive any longer, and hopefully that won't be for another 20 years or more. |
