dude, my ancestry is from the former SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF YUGOSLAVIA, that's in the Balkans

i can tell you for sure, that the hardest, hardcore Communists, once the countries that made the YUGOSLAVIA FEDERAL REPUBLIC, fell apart, all the largest Communists, atheists, became believers and the greatest patriots

point being is, people adapt to every kind of system, regime, be it out of fear or because they truly believe in their beliefs

though like someone said above, true Communism was never implemented anywhere, supposedly the people have a say in anything, but as in any system, regime, it always, the power, ends in the hands of the few who regulate the public life, in this case the CENTRAL COMMUNIST PARTY

i'm a Conservative btw, there's no perfect system in the World

i might now sound crazy for what i'm about to say, but the best system, belief imo is the SOCIAL-CONSERVATISM, the term might confuse you, but the world isn't black and white, but with a shadow of grey, even the modern Chinese aren't pure Communists because they have Capitalist foundations in their economy, so see where i'm going and what's my point
