Crock pot cat might be tasty, but they can hunt on their own and neither of us will burden each other. |

User ID: 8080014 United States 03/01/2021 08:31 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | While I always have a good supply of both cat food AND litter, there's something else to consider. Dry pets foods DO have expiration dates that actually mean something. Since most contain at least some meat by-products [with the high-end "designer" brands boasting the greatest content] the enzymes present cause the quality to deteriorate more rapidly than all-grain based foods [which are also more expensive]... and in some cases can become toxic to animal digestive systems. When you add that those dollar store brands are manufactured using really questionable ingredients it only compounds the issue. Remember that the meat Proteins used in pet foods are usually the leftovers that cannot be graded "safe for human consumption"; it is the CRAP from processing plants that is frequently already decayed to the point where they don't have to turn it into "pink slime" because it's already at that point. And the same "mystery Proteins" can be present in canned foods; recently I tried 9-Lives canned cat food containing extra Protein - but my animals would sniff it and walk away or scratch around trying to cover it up like something in their litter box! So it was pointless to buy it. I don't now what kind of Proteins they're using to boost the content, but my cats aren't finicky eaters and if they refused it something was wrong! I typically buy dry cat food in 30lb bags to save money, but by the time they get down to that last 5lbs or so I've noticed my cats vomit more after eating or develop Diarrhea. They'll also eat less because the food becomes stale and [I presume] pretty nasty-tasting. And when I offer it to local feral cats or other wildlife, in many cases even they won't touch it. Opossums/Skunks might, but the smarter Raccoons wouldn't. It's important to keep dry food in a sealed container -or at least fold the opened bag over- to reduce exposure to air as much as possible and only use bags that will be eaten within a couple of weeks [one way to tell the quality of the brand is by the bag linings: while most use a plastic coating, the better ones use foil!]. And this goes for dog food, as well. Luckily, a big plastic lidded tub will only run you around ten bucks... and you don't need one made just for pet food. Further, several years ago there was a crisis in the pet food industry when pets began to sicken and die from a well-known brand. It turned out that the company was actually substituting proteins from euthanized cats/dogs and that the trace enzymes was what was killing the pets by accumulating in their brains... the same reaction cannibalism has on primitive tribes who eat human flesh. The same thing happens when animals eat their own kind. Hint for those wanting to stock up: try FARM SUPPLY STORES, but expect to find mostly big bags there. As it is, I usually order mine online and they arrive within three days or so. Last Edited by GSB/LTD on 03/01/2021 09:01 AM |

[...] All important to note! My children have been stocking up cat food for years when on sale (they pay for their pets). The dry food gets frozen for 48 hrs (to reduce the chance of grain weevils/moths), then portioned into 1lb mylar bags or large canning jars with an oxygen absorber. This helps a lot when they are running short of funds (kids!) and also for donation to local animal shelters every couple of months. But, like human food, it needs to be rotated, not just parked on a shelf for more than a year. We did also catch a batch of Blue Buff that was recalled & we were able to return it because we hadn't used it yet. I hate that- by the time a recall is issued, usually it's been consumed. |

User ID: 80639409 Nicaragua 07/24/2021 09:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I am not sure what the prices of canned act food in the US, but in Central America a 6 oz. tin costs $1.50. I can find canned tuna cheaper, but they add MSG and one of my cats is highly allergic to it. The price has gone up 50% in one year. I currently have a 3 month supply, but I am stocking up. Even if there is no shortage, the prices won't go down. Dry food has a short shelf life, especially in the tropics. I may try to buy several smaller bags of dry food and store them in wood ash in an old broken jumbo cooler. The wood ash works for a lot of items like rice and pasta. Place the product in an airtight plastic bag and bury it in several inches of ash. Existing bugs in the product will suffocate and the ash doesn't let in air or new bugs, so food doesn't break down as quickly. You can double the shelf life this way. |
