Anonymous Coward User ID: 53679540 United States 03/02/2021 09:17 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Apparently AOC has no grasp of what actual inflation has been. In 1956, for example, the minimum wage was exactly $1.00 per hour, which is equivalent to $9.67 today. In 1968, it was $1.60 per hour, which would be $12.09 in today’s dollars. In 1981, the minimum hourly rate was $3.35/hour, equivalent today to $9.67. A minimum wage of $24.00 per hour would be absolutely exorbitant; not only would countless jobs be lost, but many businesses simply could not stay open. Note: The figures above were calculated by using the following websites: History of Federal Minimum Wage Rates [link to www.dol.gov (secure)] The Inflation Calculator [link to westegg.com (secure)] |

What is she talking about? It really is frightening when people this clueless are in office. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78173446 This is a stupid comparison. 60 years ago the average home price in the US was $11,900, which is $93K today. HOW-FUCKING-EVER, today, the average US home price is $297K. Let me know what other harsh realities you want me to open your eyes to. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 78049307 03/02/2021 09:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It's pure emotion and that's the problem. If someone works at a pizza place and makes an average of 10 pizzas an hour at $10 a pizza, that's $100 worth of product per hour that they generated. They should be paid well, no one I know disagrees with that. Problem is, say someone started at $8/hr and has worked their way up to $12/hr FT with benefits. The people who think up this $15/hr minimum wage have obviously never worked a real job in their life. Do they honestly think that that person is going to now just get bumped up to $15/hr and stay on full time with benefits?! It's a possibility, but the far more likely scenario is their hours get cut so they're not full time anymore and the company doesn't have to pay them benefits. If there are 4 cashiers making $10/hr they're likely getting replaced with 4 self-checkouts and one person making $15/hr with a handheld device to oversee them. It doesn't take a PhD in economics... |

I'm not saying up the minimum wage because the system in place will crash but something needs to be done. Can't have them destroying small businesses fighting it in stupid ways! |

Much of that is due to municipalities enacting minimum-square-foot ordinances. Try building a modest, sub-1,000 sq. ft. house in most incorporated places today. It isn’t going to happen, because they won’t get enough yearly property taxes from it. |

Those crying socialism all are fake conservatives with social security numbers practicing communism. If conservatives we're honest and really wanted people off all welfare most of which the Fed feed via QE to globalist corporations then they would support a higher wage so people wouldn't want welfare and the strings attached. |

Most make more. Current minimum wage is great for kids just starting out to learn the value of work and it allows small businesses the opportunity to hire them and yet be profitable. Damn socialists need to move to outer Siberia and practice their Draconian, anti-capitalistic nonsense! |
