Democrats Reintroduce Bill Requiring Universal Background Checks on Private Gun Sales
Don't think they're coming for your guns? They are.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) reintroduced The Background Check Expansion Act, legislation that would expand federal background checks on all gun sales, including private transactions.

Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) also reintroduced companion legislation in the House.

S. 42 states that the Act “prohibits a firearm transfer between private parties unless a licensed gun dealer, manufacturer, or importer first takes possession of the firearm to conduct a background check.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, one of 43 Democrats who have co-sponsored the bill, said now is the time to act on expanding background checks.

So a grandpa who gives his fathers old rifle to his grandson would be a felon under this law?

Re: Democrats Reintroduce Bill Requiring Universal Background Checks on Private Gun Sales
So, I'm asking a serious question here, not trolling. I would like a civil, informed, educated response.

If the purpose of universal background checks is to prevent convicted felons from using a loophole in the law to purchase firearms, why is that a bad thing?

I'm assuming most responsible, law-abiding firearm owners do not support the possession of firearms by violent convicted felons, yet any attempt by the government to close loopholes where they can bypass a background check and purchase a firearm is somehow translated into "They're coming to take our guns!!!!!"

I do not understand that thought process.

Full disclaimer: I am a Libertarian and a Constitutionalist, and I believe *any* gun law restricting access to firearms by US citizens violates the 2nd Amendment. I believe if you want to restrict convicted felons from possessing firearms, you have to amend the Second Amendment to do it legally.
