Want to Plant the Ultimate Survival Garden This Spring? You Better Start Planning Right Now
It takes a lot more than a pack of seeds and a shovel to enhance your food security with a backyard survival garden. You need a solid, practical plan. Maybe you’ve never planted a single seed before, or maybe you’ve been working in the family garden since you were old enough to walk. Either way, there’s work you should be doing right now, even if the ground is frozen. You can start planning ahead.

Look Back to Gardening History Before Looking Ahead
Many Americans planted “Victory Gardens” during World War I and II, with the goal of increasing the nation’s food supply. In 1943, for example, there were more than 20 million war gardens in the U.S. The need and interest were there, and the citizenry responded. This patriotic planting produced an estimated 8 million tons of food, which was nearly half of the food consumed that year in the nation.

Jumping forward to last year, Americans responded to a crisis once again by rolling up their sleeves and getting dirt under their fingernails. For those who were paying attention to the self-reliance boom that took place at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, you may have noticed that a lot of stores ran out of basic gardening supplies and seeds. This spring, supply chains are in much better shape than those at the end of winter and early spring of 2020, but it’s wise to remember those empty shelves. Buy the things you need when they are available. Late winter is a great time to buy seeds and garden supplies. You can get them before the spring rush hits and you’ll have the best selection. If you want to grow the ultimate garden this spring, you don’t want to wait until the resources are “picked over” in late spring.

Scout the Best Survival Garden Location
Abundant sunlight and good soil are two of the biggest factors in a successful garden, and these are features that you can begin scouting for even in the winter. If you can get a soil map of your area (these are usually available at your local agricultural extension office), you can get some great insight into the type of soil you already have. You can also get a soil test, to determine your soil type and which nutrients are lacking. And even when the leaves are down from deciduous trees and the winter sun is lower in the sky, you can still get an idea about sunny locations. It’s a major rookie mistake to build your garden where a tree or some structure will cast a shadow across it. You’ll want at least 10 hours of uninterrupted sunlight shining down on your garden, though more daylight is better.

Good job OP. I am starting some of my seedlings this week. It takes a lot of practice to get it right, many years of practice and you will still have failures and losses.
It is not as easy as most people think. You have to learn how to deal with your soil, climate, severe weather events, what grows well in your area, how to deal with your invasive weeds, wildlife, diseases and insects. The list is long and goes way beyond sprouting seeds, you have to keep them alive and get them to produce against all odds.

10 Ways to Succeed at Gardening
1. Ask around for a Master Gardener to mentor you. These are old gardeners who are trained and get certified. They may even give you starter plants for perennials. Ask them questions and write down the answers.
2. Mulch and don't do it with homemade shredded yard waste. That stuff from the woodchipper is fresh and will pull nutrients from the soil and make the soil very acid.
3. Use soaker hoses to evenly distribute gentle watering to roots. This saves water and is far more effective.
4. Use cloches to extend your harvest.
5. Use companion planting.
6. Use succession planting so you are not over welcomed by it all coming in at once.
7. Write everything down in a gardening journal. It is just common sense versus guesswork.
8. Don't do squirrely things that seem risky. If you brain is warning you that seems like a bad idea, it probably is.
9. At the end of the season, fertilize with composted manure. Rabbit manure is great and not messy. Likely you can find it free or you raise rabbits. That is an ideal medium for raising worms.
10. Do a little every day, not a lot on the weekend. That is how weeding and insect infestation and dry yellowing wilty plants happen.

For cabbage family plants, beginners should just buy transplants and later buy tomato and pepper plants.

Beginners grown spindly plants from seed because they half-ass it and pray for miracles. That just defies common sense. Ask that Master Gardener how they grow from seed. Clever beginners might try growing cabbage and broccoli from seed for their autumn crop.

If you got clay, put river sand in and bust it up. How in the world can you expect a root crop to penetrate otherwise? It is like growing in pottery shards or solid brick.

I have been collecting seeds from various wild paw paw (asamina triloba) patches i found while kayaking.

I collect moss from the front yard to keep seeds from molding and stratify them in the fridge in wet moss.

I collected alot of returned pots from Lowes and various places and plant the seeds in potting soil. i have given thought to raising them to sale to people, no investment on seed, free pots, and only soil. selling them for 10 to 15 dollars. Paw paw taste like mango and banana and consistency of a banana. the only subtropical fruit that grows in US.

I also have found black heart cherry trees that grow at a local bank, persimmons that grow in a park, chest nuts on a hiking trail, a park with persimmons and Muscadine Grape seeds that i buy at Aldi and Walmart. I have been able to grow all of them and take them to my Property.

the persimmons are for me and the deer and the bears love the paw paw so i get to hunt near them.

I have a short harsh 3 month growing season. I make a growing room tent out of mylar indoors by my biggest brightest window and use a grow light and use a fan to prevent damp off and molds. Without enough light they will get spindly. Almost everything except some root crops like potatoes need to be started indoors and be a hearty good size when transplanted to handle the harsh short growing season, insects, rodents, birds and all that.

i would get information from local gardners on when to start seedlings.

typically 15 days after the last frost date!!!

check you hardiness zone on the USDA website.

I made a raised bed from cinder blocks and left openings thru the bricks at the top. i can drive stakes all the way into the ground thru the bricks. this serves two purposes.

1. i can use the holes in the bricks to use as small planters in the garden for herbs around the perimeter

2 i can drive rebar, front and back of beds, to hold bricks in place and stop shifting and place PVC pipe over rebar and then use the PVC Pipe to cover with visqueen and make a green house!!!!

I have had alot of success with the starter cells at stores, come with peet or dirt " pellets" (place in cells with water and the swell up ) dig a little hole and plant seeds. then cover with plastic lid.

also look for heirloom seed libraries and local traders in seeds.

find a good composted dirt supplier.

look at self composting with all food scraps except citrus, milk and meats.

they kill good bacteria or draw predators and stink

worm castings are great for the garden and so is chicken cow and horse feces.

When i go to the beach i pick up large oyster shells to release nutrients into soil long term

outdoor life link also has use for wild game fur and blood and bone article as well.

Biggest Beginner Gardener Mistakes
1. Not testing the soil so straight away not knowing if the pH is good or what is missing.
2. Having the squirrely idea that spending a lot of money translates to crop yields and saving money. Nope. Buy used tools at rummage sales. Most beginners can't afford a rear tine Troy-bilt tiller. That is a very expensive way to begin. Double dig insead using the French biodynamic method.
3. Being overly ambitious. Start by reading Square Foot Gardening not just digging up the whole backyard.
4. Not planning and that patch is inadequate based on sun and shade and drainage and flooding when it rains. See #1.
5. Doing crazy things like growing Swiss chard or parsnips or kohlrabi when you don't know if you like it or if your family will eat it. Do you have recipes?
6. Not having a place to store the harvest through dehydrating it, canning it, pickling it, and freezing it.
7. Not planning for vacations so who will do your gardening duties? Can you trust them? Can you trade off with a gardening buddy?

My secret tips for speeding up growth in a very cold climate. Hook your hose up to the indoor water faucet so you can water with warm water, use a liquid feeder attachment for compost tea, nutrients when they get to be about 4inches. Use mylar around your sensitive and longer season plants and fruit for extra light and heat.

Alan Chadwick was the greatest proponent of the French Biodynamic method. That is double digging method so you get better nutrient absorption and deep roots. You get a couple of strong guys out there to spade it up, then put it back in formed gardening beds.

You need a couple of good shovels, a hoe, a garden cart, a potato fork, and a hand trowel. Most of that can be bought at rummage sales.

Anyone that loves plants, willing to get dirty and work for your own food can not be all bad so I will share some more of my must have tricks in your arsenal, cheap safe and natural solutions for problems that can wipe out your garden.

A good fence. I need elc wire and deer netting.

Citric acid repels insects and rodents. You can mix it with lime for easier dispersion.

Borax kills ants. Boil up half sugar water solution, stir in the borax, break it up after it cools and put in around ant nest and their paths.

Bleach kills wasp nests. Put it half and half with water in a pump up sprayer.

Instant mashed potatoes dry in mole and rodent tunnel openings.

Dish soap for aphids, 3 tablespoons per gallon of water in pump sprayer wash it off after 10 min, do not use in direct sunlight. A little diluted citric acid with a drop of peppermint oil between washings.

Diatamatious earth for slugs and older beetles and dish soap on the 5th day of 50 deg when they hatch.

I have tried garlic, eggs, red pepper and some other things that did not work well for me but the above does work for me.

I am still working on a moth problem, they devour the young seedlings even under garden cloth. Any tips are welcome, the forest service would love to know too :).

If you read up on growing potatoes on top of the ground, and you screw up and use hay instead of straw, then you just planted a bunch of alfalfa as the seeds drop. Straw is missing the seeds. Beginners make that kind of error.

Have leather gardening gloves not cloth. You see a thistle and remove it with cloth gloves an next thing you know is you have the worst rash all over your fingers. Warn your kids too. When a dig up a yard, a bunch of weeds will also grow.

Wheelbarrows are useless. You want a decent garden cart to save your back muscles. All that shoveling and putting down mulch and dragging something heavy ends up straining your intrinsic lower back muscles. That hurts for a whole week.

Manure when fresh is full of weed seeds. You put down composted manure and especially over winter.

Bunnies hate human hair. It freaks them out as they think of predators. Go to a beautician and get floor sweepings for free. Otherwise you just prepare a banquet for rabbits. Can't blame 'em as they are cute rascals.

Squirrel, birds, cute little chipmunks, snakes, etc will all pay visits to eat and likely to prey on some. Your cat may chow down as some field mouse takes a bite of squash or a tomato.
