Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80112119 I store my beans, rice, corn, flour, etc. in 5 gallon buckets with screw-on tops, sealed in mylar bags, with oxygen absorbers. I live in the deep south, hot and humid. I have had 12 year old rice that tastes OK. Not as good as new, but definitely edible. Beans on the other hand, don't last over 6 years. After that long, you can soak them before cooking, pressure cook them, whatever, and they are still extremely hard. Flour stays good for 6 years, but after about 10 years, it smells and tastes different. We hardly ever eat any of the dried beans we store. It is just not something we like to eat, when we have other stuff. I have stored canned foods for over 6 years. Most don't make it. The cans of acidic things, like tomato products and fruit, corrode badly. Oddly, so does chili and beans. DAK ham and vienna sausage taste pretty good, after that long, though. I think you should save your money, and spend it on tools and seed to grow food. AND PRACTICE BEFORE YOU HAVE TO. Buy enough canned goods to last you for a couple of years, so you can have something to eat until you can grow your own food. Thank you for that information. I am in a northern, cooler climate but in the summer it does get humid. Where did you store your food? Climate controlled area or in an area that gets hot? I plan to store it in my climate controlled basement, that is dry and cool. Rarely ever gets hot. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 68956865 Haha, you’re only saying that because you never found “the one”, and you threw in the “hookers” part because you’ve never been laid and the far-reaches of your imagination only exists to the point of a stereotypical fantasy. My guess is you just got finished pulling your weewee and are now turning red in the face over what you just read. |

Lots of canned tuna and canned chicken. This way you rotate items with regular life. Protein powder mix is a staple for me. Just needs water and you have an instant meal in a glass. This is my throw away item. If it gets old just replace and chuck the expired one as I go. I shoot for 6 months to a year stash. Anything beyond that is another world to me anyway. I can sprout a wheat grass carpet in 8 days; there is your greens. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 79096761 United States 03/07/2021 11:53 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If you make what you say your and your wife do I would just go down the route of buying a "Prepackaged Food" package that is already canned and ready for 20 years of storage - though do rotate out all milk/egg related products every 5 years or so. Also ... in buying your preps take the number in your household and TRIPLE IT!! You WILL end up with others trying to mooch off of your prepping and for the most part those will be people you feel you can NOT turn down (some brothers /sisters and their families, parents, uncles/aunts etc.). If you have a family of 4 then a YEAR'S supply of food from a prepping outfit will actually serve you for 3 to 4 months if the SHTF in a big way because of the moochers. (this is where basic foods come in ... buy those IN ADDITION so as "stretch out" the time line) About the only place where moochers are not going to be a BIG issue is if you are in a Mormon Community were the people are also big preppers. Under church doctrine Mormons are supposed to have enough supplies to last them and their family for at least a year (recommended I believe is 2 years, maybe a strong Mormon can chime in). Finally in getting preps don't forget about the fact that the Mormon Church produces some very good guides for prepping AND they also run canneries that in addition to providing for long term storage prepping food for Mormons some of the canneries also sell to the general public at certain times. The one in my city does open up their location once a month for non-Mormons to buy. The easier it is for you to substitute your money for your time the quicker it will be for you to get fully stocked up, and probably a storage pantry with fewer voids. ALSO ... do NOT FORGET WATER!! A way to get it and a way to PURIFY IT. You are going to need a LOT of water over the course of a year when you are talking about several people. |

I layer the food with diatomaceous earth for bug control (it's non-toxic). dried beans store forever (see the Egyptians) so go nuts I think I got about 10, just for little old me any of you rascals wanna come steal my beans, I got other stuff stored too ps I admit to frequenting food banks, so they do rather pile up - if you qualify, swallow your pride & go |

We have a community of like minded people so maybe we shall survive. But I just want to make sure my family has enough food for what may come. Survival Knowledge is best. Preps just make that survival easier. Learn what grows naturally or wild, that you can live off from. At the very least, to supplement your diet with. Preps will probably be stolen or looted from you at gun point, at some point. Or you many have to abandon them and run for your lives, to escape from looters, or fire or other disaster. So do not rely solely upon them. |

Beans fuck beans who the fuck wants beans and rice when your in the most depressed state fuckin noob the two together provide all 8 essential amino acids, not that you would understand that; as well both are fairly high on caloric scale, add in some squash and you have the proverbial hispanic "three sisters" to have a high calorie base to provide sustenance while you forage for the rest |

Here's the tip of a lifetime: Prep what you 1)know your family will actually eat, 2) what is simple and quick to prepare, or 3) what you know you can barter. It's a mistake to buy 10 years supply worth of beans if they only occasionally like a few types of beans. Beans also require soaking in water for many hours, which will just eat into your already too low water supply...unless you plan on bathing in the bean water. Here's a good exercise: Do a dry run with your family for 1 week...no food, water, or electricity for a week...live only out of your storage. It will reveal quite a bit. |
