You just stop...wait for your system to adjust to lower octane fuel, and just stop buying alcohol...

it's imperative to have a support system

i recommend AA meetings

you can try cold turkey but if you fall off the wagon

go to AA

make contacts

get a sponsor

believe in yourself and love yourself enough to try

Just refuse to buy it. I quit because of limited access. Stay away from wherever it is.

AA was the only thing that worked for me, and I tried everything. Sober 16 years after 35 years out there drinking and drugging. Go to AA.org to find meetings in your area. Live or Zoom.

An assassin who you pay to do surveillance breaks into your house at any hour and beats you unconscious with a crowbar if you fail your urinary analysis.

Your dentist will ask you if you are experiencing domestic abuse but you tell him how happy you are in finding creative methods of sobriety.

Mr. Assassin also rewards you for being sober by cleaning your dishes, some light cooking, laundry, and vacuuming.

Should he vacuum behind your drapes and find your secret stash of Bushmills well he beats you with the vacuum, then the toilet seat, then the spatula, and finally shoves you face first into the washing machine during spin cycle.

That'll be $12000.

Ask the low lifes about him under the bridge. Don't stare at his eye patch.

True alcoholics can not stop on their own will power. Disease of alcoholism will eventually get you drinking against your own will.. however, a heavy drinker can control it.
Try some controlled drinking for 30 days. You’ll get your answer.

I treat alcohol like a prescription drug.
(by limiting the DOSE)
(limit myself to 3 drinks or shots, and usually it is only 1 drink or shot (in a day) if I'm not socializing)

But you have to have some discipline to do this of course.

It will take a multi-faceted approach, but start by repenting from your sins, reading the scriptures (start with Genesis), and this protocol:

And you need accountability. AA has helped many.

Re: Can someone give me advice on ending drinking for good
I run a nonprofit where we foster pets for people who are hospitalized, homeless, etc. We will only take pets on referral from a licensed social worker, treatment facility, etc who will vouch for and monitor the pet owner. Otherwise there is very little chance the pet owner will be able to improve their circumstances sufficiently to recover the pet. What I am trying to say to OP is, ask for help from a licensed professional to help you through this, sign in to a treatment program, etc. don’t do it alone.

Ease off the alcohol slowly. Instead of your usual amount each day, cut it back by half beer for a few days. After three days cut back by a whole beer and so on. You do not want to quit cold turkey. You can develop DT's which can be dangerous. DT's include rapid onset of confusion, shaking, irregular heart rate and shivering.

Find supportive friends or family. Do not hang around your usual people that do like to drink.

Call a friend and find someone who can remind you of your goal.

Pray over your addiction.

Also, do not keep alcohol around once you are able to cut back completely.

Lastly, find a good habit to pick up such as walking or running.

It is one day at a time. God bless you!

Re: Can someone give me advice on ending drinking for good
For me to stop my procrastination, the most important thing was to identify the real trigger that made me make bad choices.

I imagined how doing something I enjoy made me feel, (Trigger / Dopamine), and down the procrastination road I went.

I had to de-program my mind to "enjoy" the satisfation of getting things done, more than the pleasurable activities.

That was key.

Good luck OP, I think the same principal applies.

Don’t think of it as giving something up. Think of it as allowing better things to come into your life. Perspective is key to any tough situation. In a world full of situations you can’t control, that’s one you can.

Re: Can someone give me advice on ending drinking for good
For me it was AA as well ... embracing the other members as my new peer group outside meetings. Living life instead of chasing the next drink, when I was done / accepted the truth the poison was rotting my mind, body and soul. ... Went for 3 or 4 years and have found what I needed to remain away from alcohol within my family unit since.

Whatever you run with know you have support here ... this board killed a lot of my time struggling to stay sober ... the education / content gained through the search feature kept my mind on other things.

I am in a long term relationship, have 3 kids, 4th on way ... am a home owner ... own my car ... CC debt under 5k (now) ... this was not the way things were nor were heading ... was living in parents basement in early 20s as a high school drop out as a simple snap shot ... started drinking heavy at 13 ... escalated into other stuff by 15 ... in drug rehab at 16 in the early 90s which didnt take lol ...

If you put the energy out you will get objectives in the end. It can be worth it.

(I am the psychological and emotional support for my young wife battling cancer ... the liablity I WOULD have been instead of asset can not be understated ... quite shocking what the world actually will throw at you when you can stand a chance at handling it)

Start taking 5-HTP (200mg every 4 hours). It will remove your desire to drink, and you will feel good about it.

Extreme results take extreme measures: change your friends change where you go what you do.

It’s worth it. Don’t waste any more time being a drunk.

There aren’t any answers inside a bottle.... stop looking there.

I'm 30 and still can't understand how people get addicted to alcohol. A 1 hour buzz and I'm already bored and sleep it off. And that's maybe 4 times a year.
How do you sit there and Keep drinking it all day.

Re: Can someone give me advice on ending drinking for good
I don't have any advice.

I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed drinking and I guess I drank so much that my body can't take any more alcohol. Ever.

If I have just a half teaspoon, my eyes/sinuses hurt really bad.

So I can't enjoy the whiskey, rum, gin, martinis or anything else with alcohol ever again.

I wish you good luck OP.
