Stay away from faultlines.

Have food and shelter ready NOW.

Don't ever get suckered into living in a city (outskirts, suburbs with a few of some farm land is as close as you need to get).

These aren't the most ideal times in the US, however, perhaps consider that it's definitely not the darkest.

Right now, if you need food and live near a major urban area, there are charities that you can drive to and get food from.

There have been times in this country when this wasn't the case, and people literally starved to death.

The vast majority of Americans currently have access to clean water right now.

It's not as comfortable as it has been, but it's still better than most humans have had it for most of history.
