Klinger (Jamie Farr) was a recurring character during the first few seasons but he became a regular (starring) member when Radar was discharged after Uncle Ed died so I don't consider Klinger in the same category as Rizzo, or Igor, or Nurse Kelley, or even Rosie.

It jumped the shark in the sense that it's supposed to be about the early 1950s, but all the characters had the sensibilities of the 70s. The movie with Donald Sutherland had more of the sensibility of the actual era

First 3 seasons were the best, but I liked the whole series (minus the last season when they were basically phoning it in). BJ is a libtard in real life.

That's because the original idea piloted was for the Vietnam war, but it was too close to the bone, and they were 'ordered' to make it about Korea....

I preferred Trapper John to BJ as well, but was glad when Ferret Face went over the cliff insane and they replaced him w Charles Emerson Winchester III. I liked Charles' character a lot... Boston blueblood in a warzone, trying to make his life as comfortable as possible in an impossible position.

The actor playing Trapper was approached during his last year contract to become a lead man in other TV series style shows .

He had LSD , " Lead Singer Disease " and was the most liked character on the show according to fan mail .

He went for it and lost his popularity fast and faded away faster .

Many great actors on that show .

Klinger was the firsts trans or cross dresser on a major TV show, he was a loveable character. The theme song is titled Suicide is Painless and it still sticks in people's head today if you grew up watching it.

A great career decision, like Shannon Doerty in "Mall Rats," and Shelly Long in "Troop Beverly Hills."

No, it did well for a while. I watched it going up and in syndication. It was hardly about Trapper John though. More like the antics of Dr. Gonzo. It sort of reminds me of Scrubs the TV medical comedy series. But, more dramatic like Engine 51. There was always a moral to the story as well.

It was the best show on TV ever! Even now the reruns are still as fresh and funny as ever. It isn't about the war so much as it is about the people caught up in it. They were far away from their loved ones and never knew if they'd ever see them again.

No, it was to point out the hypocrisy of a man pretending to be a woman, so he could shirk his responsibilities. Corporal Klinger ended up married and expecting a baby in the spin-off after Mash. His gimmick was all a farce and a joke.

The message was men can't be real women, they just have to be men. Drag is as close as they can get to the privileges of being a female. And, the military really does not care what you wear, but you have to be there if you are a biological man and your country is at war.

Nowadays the military would be like giving him hormones a women's uniform and entertain his nonsense so long as it does not interfere with the overall mission. So, really nothing has changed.
