The new stimulus legislation, signed by President Joe Biden on Thursday, doesn’t stop stimulus payments from being garnished, 19 consumer and financial industry groups said in a joint letter sent to Congress earlier this week. The second stimulus package had a specific provision to protect payments from garnishment, while the first stimulus bill allowed the garnishment of stimulus money only for back child support.
